On the downside, black levels are good but not ground-breaking. Some dark objects look a little pale, particularly when you move off centre, but shadow detail during dark scenes is excellent

Toshiba's 47Z3030 is a likeable enough big-screen LCD TV, and it's now being discounted to some pretty attractive prices. But either because of its extra size or its use of a different core panel to its 42in sibling, its picture quality doesn't impress...

Toshiba 47Z3030D sports the most advanced colour management system (CMS) and the best overall video processing I've seen on an LCD TV so far, but its black level lags behind the best-in-class SPVA panels.

The Toshiba 42Z3030D may not ultimately claim the title of best medium sized LCD TV, but it has certainly joined a select group of leading manufacturers including Panasonic and Sony who are at the leading edge of LCD technology.
