HARDWARE REVIEW: Toshiba 47VL863B

Toshiba's 47VL863B is its first passive 3D TV. John Archer finds out if it helps or hinders the passive argument

Excellent calibration tools; fuss-free 3D; neat styling; Places smart TV portal

Suffers from a limited contrast range; 3D BDs lack detail

The set’s contrast issues stop me giving it a whole-hearted recommendation. However, its 3D pictures are fun and friendly, and there are times when its 2D images look very nice, too. And it’s cheaper than LG’s 47LW550T equivalent…

Toshiba 47VL863 review

Toshiba deserves its reputation as a click-teaser. SED, Cell TV, Full-array LED: all mouth-watering TV technologies that it's promised that have come to nought. But there is hope. This year the company appears determined to be cutting-edge and not just...

Excellent 2D hi-def and motion clarity, sophisticated design, affordable, kid-friendly 3D

Uneven media playback support, Smart TV portal lags behind rivals

Excellent picture quality, understated design and easy to live with Passive 3D, Toshiba’s 47VL863 has the modern family squarely in its sights. While we’re not yet totally convinced by its Smart TV proposal, it has enough potential to keep us...

Toshiba 47VL863 3D LED TV review

While passive 3D is still only mass-adopted by the cinema industry it's fast being shipped over TVs as the technology improves. Toshiba's passive 3D TV is a cut above, hitting the sweet spot on price and quality.

Corking 2D hi-def picture ; Stylish design ; Flicker free, low cost 3D

Mediocre media streaming ; No album art support ; Clunky Toshiba Places net port

Toshiba 47VL863B

Toshiba‘s 47VL863B makes another persuasive case for passive 3D technology.

Comfortable 3D viewing ; Four pairs of glasses included ; Good value

Black level response not great ; Some backlight inconsistency ; Online service short of content

Some edge LED flaws when showing dark scenes in 2D stop the 47VL863B from being anything more than a solid 2D performer. Also, while there’s potential in the new Toshiba Places ‘smart TV’ system, right now it’s rather off the pace compared with what...

Toshiba Regza 42VL863 hands-on

Toshiba's Regza 42VL863 LED TV uses passive 3D technology, and it looks very promising. It's not short on other intriguing features either, so it's got us rather excited. Fingers crossed it won't be ludicrously pricey.

Passive 3D technology looks promising ; Toshiba Places Web service includes BBC iPlayer

Could be very expensive

Toshiba Regza 47VL863 passive 3D TV

Review Although ostensibly an aperitif to Toshiba's incoming flagship LED TV models, this modestly priced 47-incher is a headline maker in its own right. Not only is it the first flatscreen from the brand to offer access to the newly-opened Toshiba...

The 47VL863 may not hit every ball out of the park - its media streaming capabilities are basic, and Toshiba Places needs work - but its HD picture quality and family friendly 3D tech make this a genuine mid-range contender. Well worth auditioning. ®

Low input lag in game mode ; Passive 3D works really well ; Good colour tones

Blacks aren't quite as black as plasmas, but still decent ; You can see interlacing if you sit really really close with Passive 3D on
