Sony Bravia KDL-D3000 Series LCD TV (32",40")

Well, it's about time. Sony has tried to keep us quiet with a range of 'Bravia v1.5' models in recent months, but we've really been chomping at the bit to get our hands on its new LCD TVs proper. And that day has now arrived

1080p/24fps capability, Impressive features, Good all round picture performance

Some issues with motion handling

The first of Sony's true 'next generation' Bravias is here.

Panasonic TX-32LXD700F

With most other models in Panasonic's latest LCD range scooping best buy awards left, right and centre, we're chomping at the bit at the arrival of the brand's flagship model

Good looks and specification, Superb pictures

Improvable black levels

Spoiler warning! This is the greatest LCD TV that Panasonic has produced so far and demands your undivided attention

LG 47LB2RF LCD TV

If there are two things we like our large LCD TVs to offer, it's a big screen and a full HD resolution. Cue LG's 47LY95: a 47in behemoth with the required Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel count.

Looks good, Impressive specification

Black levels, Juddering images

The manufacturer's largest Full HD LCD TV is big on up-front appeal, but it doesn't quite do enough to hit paydirt

Goodmans LD3261HDFVT

One thing you know for sure you're going to get with a Goodmans TV is a jaw-droppingly low price. What you can't be certain of, though, is what your puny outlay will get you in terms of performance

Very low price, Built-in digital tuner, Brightness, Limited noise at standard definition

Plasticky finish and design, Poor connectivity, Sound quality, Average picture quality

The budget brand's latest low-price offering doesn't quite manage to set the cat among the pricing pigeons

Philips PFL7562 Series LCD TV (32",37",42")

While Philips has proven highly capable at the top end of the LCD TV market, its record at the budget end is rather mixed. So we set about testing the £700 32PFL7562D with more than a little trepidation in our hearts

Great price, Strong features, Good black levels

Some motion smearing

This is an aggressively affordable performer of a 32in LCD TV that will put the frighteners on similarly sized rivals

Hitachi P42T01

Spotted selling online for about £750, this is one of the UK's most affordable plasmas. That's hardly a shock coming from Hitachi, a company that has made its name offering low prices and high quality

Excellent price, Good connectivity provided, Sleek and well designed

Picture noise with standard definition, Disappointing black levels, Some issues with skin tones

Although this 42in plasma TV is big on features and small on price, average picture quality really lets the side down

LG - 50PB65 -

LG's new 50in plasma sure knows how to make an impact. First it leaps off the shelf with its price: just £1,350. Then it slaps you round the eyeballs with its attractive design, based on LG's classic 'Chocolate' mobile phones.

Superb colours, Good motion handling

Disappointing blacks, Slight lack of picture sharpness

This 50in plasma scores high on up-front impact, but there are a couple of significant flaws that reveal themselves too

Panasonic TH-PX70 Series Plasma TV (37",42",50")

Panasonic's plasma prowess is the stuff of legend. But now that good and aggressively priced rivals like the Samsung PS50Q97HD are forcing Panasonic's prices ever lower, can the brand still maintain its quality edge?

Superb black levels, Great sharpness and colour, Competitive price, Good standard-def pictures, Impressive audio

With a picture performance that leaves us shaken and stirred, you've a plasma TV that's worth every single penny

Samsung LE-M87 Series LCD TV (32",37",40",46",52")

If there's a TV out there right now with more up-front appeal than Samsung's LE52M87BD, then we can't think of it. It's a vision in gloss black, and at 52 inches it's the biggest LCD Samsung has done to date

Peerless black level for an LCD, Good connections, Superbly crisp colours and bright picture

Some issues with motion handling

Further proof that the old plasma v LCD arguments are becoming less and less relevant. It's certainly not perfect, but it's one of the finest big-screen LCDs we've seen to date

Goodmans LD2661HDFVT

With most TVs in the 26-inch class costing £600 - only marginally less than some decent 32-inch options - we really had started to think that maybe the 26-inch price level had bottomed out. And then along comes Goodmans with the LD2661HDFVT

Better than expected standard-def pictures, Ridiculously cheap

Uninspiring build quality, Colours and black levels aren't great, Poor audio

Superbly affordable, but perhaps one or two too many compromises have to be made
