Much as we've liked the Sony Bravia TVs that have come our way so far, they haven't been completely flawless. So we're only too pleased to get our hands on a sort of 'S-series Bravia MkII' in the shape of the KDL-32S2530
Impressive picture sharpness, 2 HDMI ports, Good price
Colours sometimes look a bit unreal
This 32in LCD TV is a 'kind of' upgrade to Sony's entry-level Bravia series with improvements that are hard to dislike

With an abundance of 1080-line material now available from the likes of Sky HD, Blu-ray and HD DVD, there's a growing demand for TVs with 1920 x 1080 resolution. Sharp's LC-37XD1E recognises this need, boasting a 'full' HD resolution
Decent connections, Good-quality HD pictures
Poor audio
With its amazing resolution, this LCD superstar unlocks the full potential of high-def pictures, but it's far from flawless

Look up 'no frills' in the dictionary, and you'll probably find a picture of a Goodmans TV. For years the manufacturer has led the way in producing stripped down (but decent) TVs at eye-catchingly low prices
Great price, Good pictures and sound for the price
Looks cheap
The budget brand serves up another likeable slice of money-saving LCD TV pie - yours for only a monkey

One of the biggest drawbacks with LCD technology is that picture quality can reduce dramatically when you view the screen from a wide angle. Hitachi is looking to change all that with the 32LD9700
Superb viewing angle, Makes the most of hi-def and standard-def, Excellent connectivity, Impressive sound
Nominal amounts of mist and blur at times
A fantastic all-rounder that has virtually no weaknesses to speak of

Fans though we are of Sony's latest Bravia LCD range, they're certainly not flawless. So we're chuffed to report that Sony has pleasantly surprised us by launching upgraded versions of its 'S' and 'V' series to sell alongside the original models
Excellent picture and sound, HDMI v1.3 support
No DVD-A or SACD playback, Firmware upgrades required
You'll need to couple it with kit of a similar quality to get the most from it, but its most is an awful lot indeed

This 40in LCD TV from Samsung boasts a new colour-boosting technology called eXtended Wide Colour Gamut (XWCG), which uses a special backlight system that covers more of the PAL colour range than a typical LCD set
Affordable, Decent HD picture quality, Good features set
Weak audio, Poor standard-def performance
Even given the attractive price, there are enough disappointments here to make you think twice

For a manufacturer that prides itself on being at the vanguard of new technology, it's surprising that Samsung has only just got round to shipping a Full HD LCD TV - the 40in LE-40F71B
Above-average connections, Accepts 1080p, Excellent colour
No digital tuner, Over-zealous factory settings
Not quite the best LCD in its class but a decent statement of intent from Samsung

Most manufacturers' new ranges of TVs seem like simply a gentle progression from what they've produced before. But on the evidence of the LC-42XD1E, Sharp's new LCD range is more like a full-blown revolution
Astounding HD sharpness, Vibrant colours, Great price
No component video input, Some standard-def MPEG artefacts
A superb LCD TV at a price that's hard to ignore

This 42in set is the first in the UK to offer an impressive three HDMI inputs and introduces us to another processing mode - Active Vision M100. The Active Vision technology not only enhances detail and colour but also ups the picture refresh rate
Three HDMIs, Superb picture quality, Excellent sound performance
No full HD, Some motion shimmering
Strong in all areas and with an attractive price, this is one of the best LCDs we've come across

The design of this 32in LCD TV is inspired by pop art, giving it a distinctive retro look. The black and white colour scheme and elegant curves make it the kind of TV you can imagine Twiggy watching back in the Swinging Sixties
Intriguing design, Good overall performance
Standard-def pictures can struggle, Narrow viewing angle
A decent enough LCD. Whether you buy one will probably depend on how much you like its looks
