Poor Documentation - Good Value

I am considering replacing an older unit in another location with this one

It works. Great value. 8 channels w/ 500 GB hard drive for $199 on sale. Very hard to beat ; Remote viewing w/ iPhone app works as well ; Small footprint. Quiet

Documentation is very "light". If you have experience in systems like this you can figure it out, but it missing a lot of information most people would need ; Does not have pre-event recording (x seconds before motion triggered event) least that...

5 Iron Eggs to Newegg's customer service. Once I reported my issues with the DVR bundle and that I was not satisfied with my purchase, I was issued an RMA with a waiver of the restocking fee on the spot, and even a free UPS return shipping label. Way...

see my original review of 12/5/2010 ; The company's tech support proved to be well responsive. They sent me an email with a link to the firmware update. The download wasn't available on the product page on the manufacturer website when I downloaded it,...

see my original review of 12/5/2010 ; The cons I have with this unit now are (1) NetViewer works only with IE, and I've divorced Micro$oft few years ago and use Linux exclusively, hence I depend on FireFox for my web needs. (2) NetViewer does not mimic...

I'm writing this to update my review from earlier. The company released a new firmware upgrade so the display is now in color.

These people are blaiming the DVR for the cameras problems

I think with better cams this DVR would give a much more satisfactory user experience. I plan to get some....will report when I do.

The cameras are whats causing these people to say the DVR only displays B&W. The cheap cameras Night owls sells give very washed out pictures even with the brightness turned down to 8 in the software. A bright red car just has a tinge of pink in the pic

With some firmware updates this DVR will be a fine little unit for keeping an eye on my house

The manufacturer support finally got back to me and said "There are a select few TVs that will not display the color properly on this DVR unit. We are working on a firmware fix for this which will be released fairly soon." Really? It is not a mere...

Do your research before buying. I bought mine on a BF day deal. Impulse buy. If I can do it again I would probably have a dedicated computer for my security needs.

It only displays black and white on 3 tested TV. I can't believe they released this product w/o testing it first! Their products are garbage. Everything feels like a toy and the cameras are at best a high-end webcam ; I don't want to return this to pay...

Does not work as advertised!

Cons continued ... an external flash drive. A consistent bug when backing up large files. Didn't recognize High Density flash drives Remote control has to be pointed EXACTLY at the IR receiver to work. I haven't tried the phone software, so can't...

Inexpensive ; Small foot print ; Light weight ; Decent 500GB Hard drive ; Ethernet ready ; TPZ ready ; 8 BNC input

Did not display its own menus in color when connected directly to my Samsung HDTV via BNC to RCA cable that came with it even after going through ALL POSSIBLE permutations mixing and matching settings on the TV and the DVR ends (resolutions and...

Works as avertised

The remote control and a local monitor is needed to set it up, as all setup/maint. functions cannot be accessed thru the remote internet software. After it's setup it seems it can be stuck away in a video closet and just used through the remote network...

Small and made to be mainly accessed through the net. The internet software lets you do almost everything except some very basic admin tasks like setting time and formatting drive/s ; It works as advertised. I haven't tried the phone software, so can't...

In my week of playing with it, have only discovered 2 minor bugs ; 1. The cams must installed in order without any gaps, or the camera setup software glitches on the last cam. (ie. if you have 4 cams they must be installed in spots 1-4, not 1-3 and...
