Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

For reasons unknown to gods or men, soccer simply never took of in the United States quite like it did...well, everywhere else. In fact, to a foreigner, it is something like walking into the Twilight Zone, or so I've had it described. Mind you, it...

Pick-up-and-play gameplay ; Tons of replay, online and off ; Rather true-to-life audio

Offline multiplayer is a mess ; Online lacks WiiSpeak support ; Woah! What’s with the crowds

Unlike, say, first-person shooters, there aren't exactly vast resources to compare soccer games to. No, there are maybe two or three key titles, and then a dozen other short-lived pretenders to the throne that suddenly show up one day and fade back...

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Refined controls and additional modes of play make Pro Evo's second Wii outing an improvement over last year's debut.

Champions League and Master League modes ; Thorough tutorial mode ; Online play is well implemented ; Alternate control schemes allow a more traditional play style

Very few official teams and venues ; Some awkward player animations

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Review

Following injuries sustained by devastating online lag last year, PES squares up for another shot on goal...

Become A Legend mode is promising ; 2 vs. 2 online multiplayer for the first time ; Online lag has been ironed out for the most part

The Champions League mode lacks substance ; An auto-trick feature spoils the fun ; Player animations are jerky at times

Put it this way: we've been avid PES fans since the series inception and this year we're FIFA converts. PES makes changes to its formula that aren't particularly welcome for the most part and, while the Become A Legend mode has potential, the general...

So what's new? Well, for the first time you have a full, seperate mode for the UEFA Champions League, complete with that mad choir music they play during the breaks. You know the stuff we mean. You take one of a range of teams through the 32 man...

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

There has always been the two camps since Pro Evolution Soccer started its challenge on EA's FIFA franchise. You tended to either like the FIFA gloss and realistic names or you loved the gameplay and flair available from Konami's PES.

Tactics Selection ; Some Nice Moves Available

Too Complicated ; Looks Old Style

At first glance you expect some good things from PES 2009, the intro is very nice and you'd think there is some real class in the games graphical abilities. Then comes the menu system and the game itself and you realise that the intro must have taken...

Pro Evolution Soccer 09 review

I have a long history with football games – I even played in the inaugural FIFA Interactive World Cup on the Irish team, flown to London to compete in the Northern European finals – and while I have little experience in the Pro Evo series, I've always...

Pro Evolution Soccer 09 is perhaps the best example of why the PS3 has suffered so much at the hands of a machine many believe is inferior.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

For years EA has been accused of stealing ideas from the people's choice of football games, Pro Evolution Soccer, and implementing them into their own. But this year seems to be different- the boot, quite literally, is on the other foot.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (Wii)

Console gaming's football game war kicked off once again with the release of Pro Evolution 2009. Every year we expect and anticipate it, but rarely do we know which of the two big names will come out on top. The FIFA series delivered the first blow in...

Unique controls are good once adapted to ; Great feeling scoring a goal ; Official rights to UEFA Champions League ; Passing system accuracy ; Formation setting

Control system is tricky to get used to at first ; Poor graphics ; Not enough official club names ; Vision impaired during game-play ; Slow feel to game

Pro Evo 2009 is good effort but unfortunately rebounds off the bar in terms of this "Pro Evo vs FIFA" contest. It is a different game on the Wii and in itself is a good attempt (not one to try after a few cup final beers though!), but the standard was...
