The Golden Compass

It's not the worst game based on a movie, but it's close.

The Daemon and the Alethiometer gameplay add little excitement to a tedious game

Slow and repetitive gameplay; bad voice acting and cut-scene audio; no camera control

The Golden Compass review for the WII

The curse of the movie license.

Looks awful; Plays worse; Sounds terrible; Plot like a hole in the ground that you dump precious hours of your life into; Inspires homicidal urges in the most patient anglophiles

Based on the film that is based on the book of a different name, The Golden Compass videogame is, much like a lot of videogames based on books and or films, very generic. So generic in fact, that somehow in creating this game the developers have...

Imagine the scene. Little Jimmy asked Mummy for a really cool new Wii game for Christmas. Dearest Mother went into the local game store and browsed over the shelves. There under 'new releases' she spots The Golden Compass. "Well," she thinks "It's...

The Golden Compass (2007)

Like DFS adverts, broken fairy lights and sprouts, console spin-offs from the biggest family flicks have become an integral part of the Christmas blitzkrieg of consumerism. Yet while kiddy quests are normally half-baked cash-ins, Golden Compass puts an...

The Golden Compass

Following the successful film adaptation of the Harry Potter books, producers quickly turned their attention to other children's fantasy novels in a bid to follow the dollar signs. They didn't have to look far to find the highly popular His Dark...

Good adaptation, with easy to use controls ; Nice details (ice makes you slide around) ; Good voice work from Richards ; Makes you use your head ; You can use the alethiometer

Dodgy accents for supporting characters ; Younger kids might struggle with harder puzzles

The Golden Compass strikes just the right balance between youthful arctic adventure and strategy puzzle solver. Fans of the book will probably be much happier with the game compared to the film.
