Pikmin 3′ review

Pikmin 3 is an odd choice for a Wii U savior. Strip away the cute, little plant-like aliens and you're left with a highly technical real-time strategy game that ditches epic-scale warfare in favor of exploration and environmental puzzle-solving.

Story mode is paced well and delivers a solid risk/reward balance for your explorations ; Gorgeous visuals make the most of the Wii U hardware ; Mission and Bingo Battle modes provide multiple extra hours of Pikmin goodness

Multi-group micromanagement isn't as fun as it could be due to the rather helpless AI ; Occasional fixed camera moments lead to frustrations and many Pikmin deaths

Pikmin 3 doesn't have enough of a mainstream hook to sell a ton of Wii Us, but it's one of the best and sharpest-looking games to date for Nintendo's new console.

More than any of the other Pikmin games, the third is what one might call timeless.

Part of satisfying combat is not just a sense of accomplishment earned after an epic, high-stakes battle, but a genuine feeling of regret regarding the sacrifices you had to make to get there.

Pikmin 3 puts you on the other side of the magnifying glass—making the tiniest stream of water a massive river, or the shards of a broken clay pot a makeshift bridge.

Remarkably for a twelve year old franchise, Pikmin still feels like a fresh take on the strategy genre. Perhaps that’s because Nintendo’s frugal management of the series has sheltered it from the erosion of repetition – this latest instalment is the...

Cautious iteration in favour of radical evolution is unsurprising, however, when you consider that Pikmin 3 represents the most significant first party Wii U release to date. Nintendo is no doubt resting some fairly substantial hopes on the shoulders...

Pikmin 3- WIIU

Strategic combat and rewarding exploration make the adorable Pikmin 3 a satisfying adventure in planetary survival.

Massive levels that reward exploration ; Exciting combat encounters ; Hectic competitive mode ; Mission mode ups the challenge considerably ; Lovely artistic design

Neither control method is ideal ; Pikmin have poor pathfinding

Death is not handled lightly in Pikmin 3. When one of your friends falls in battle, its soul floats upward from its body into the clear blue sky. It's heartbreaking to see a group of souls soar toward heaven after a difficult fight, and that constant...

Pikmin 3

Pikmin 3 is the best ever Pikmin, and a cracking example of what Nintendo still does best.

Gorgeous CGI cartoon graphics ; New emphasis on exploration and adventure ; Bigger, deeper and richer than it first appears

Grows a little (and only a little) repetitive with time ; Pikmin very vulnerable while you're not in direct control

All of this is brilliant, but what makes Pikmin 3 so deep and rewarding is that it’s got a sense of exploration and adventure that previous Pikmins didn’t really have. Every day you can choose which of the unlocked areas of the planet your spaceship...
