Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 Review (Xbox 360)

From clunky cartridges to compact discs, wired controllers to Bluetooth sticks, Goldeneye battles at your mate's house to online Call of Duty wars -- through the years I have welcomed all sorts of changes in my gaming life. But the one thing that...

Authentic gameplay. Improved ball physics. Edit options

Graphics and presentation are not next-gen. Online servers could be better. Limited licenses

In Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, Konami's critically acclaimed soccer series maintains its focus on a smooth, realistic simulation of the sport. Exclusive to the series this year is a Union of European Football Associations Champions mode of play, featuring

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. We still remember the pride that rushed through our bodies a few years back when Pro Evo finally overtook FIFA as the footy purist's game of choice. We've been there since its chunky PSone beginnings, seen it grow and...

Instead, as is almost becoming customary for the series, this is more or less a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ situation. Only this year, that one step back is instead a series of stumbles that will inevitably see the much-loved footy series lose...

There has always been the two camps since Pro Evolution Soccer started its challenge on EA's FIFA franchise. You tended to either like the FIFA gloss and realistic names or you loved the gameplay and flair available from Konami's PES.

Tactics Selection ; Some Nice Moves Available

Too Complicated ; Looks Old Style

At first glance you expect some good things from PES 2009, the intro is very nice and you'd think there is some real class in the games graphical abilities. Then comes the menu system and the game itself and you realise that the intro must have taken...

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is an improvement on last year's game, but this is a series that desperately needs a complete overhaul.

Simple, easy-to-pick-up gameplay ; Champions League license with official teams and sponsors ; New four-player online mode

Lack of improvement to core gameplay ; Dated animation system looks stilted ; Impoverished and laggy online play ; Poor presentation and commentary

Once a cult classic, and then a renowned franchise - Pro Evolution Soccer, what was once International Superstar Soccer Pro Evolution 2 - became the obvious choice for football game fans; whereas the big-branded Electronic Arts title, FIFA, was only...

I am a fifa man and have been since fifa 98. My flatmate is a pes man and there was the usual fifa vs pes banter. pes 08 was a decent game and should have made way for pes 09 to beat fifa easily. However, instead of fixing the controls (seriously why...

The football wars have never been closer, with the struggle for dominance now more akin to last season's right-to-the-wire title chase between Manchester United and Chelsea. Last year's PES turned off a lot of fans, due to a lack of progression in...

It seems to happen ever year now, the first impressions of PES tend to be bad ones, and it's only through repeated play that you get to appreciate its finer points. However, for a game that used to be so consistent, it would be nice to have a year...

Pro Evolution 2009 is much the same as last years outing.a slightly improved Edit mode makes up for the lack of kits once again due to non FA backing.the game play still feels the same but that's not a bad thing.Graphics still look washed out compared...

Although it makes me weep to say it, Fifa wins this year (first time for everything i suppose).

Product Specifications

Pro Evolution Soccer is back for 2009! The terms "PES" and "Winning Eleven" have always been synonymous with realism and superior gameplay, but this year PES will further narrow the gap between the game, and the real thing! New stadiums, players' motions and gameplay modes will bolster a game already focused on providing an exciting soccer experience. In 2009, Pro Evolution will once again push the limits of soccer gaming. If it were any more real, you'd be on the field!
