Enticing rewards tempt you into Spelunky's dangerous and exhilarating world.

Excellent risk-reward dynamic ; Great variety of enemies, traps, and items ; Unlocking shortcuts forces you to play differently ; Lots of flexibility in how to progress

Control quirks ; Forgettable cooperative and competitive modes

No matter which path you take, the most troubling obstacles you have to overcome are your own tendencies. A tribal assassin may be standing at the far end of the screen, readying his boomerang for anyone who has the gall to cross him. Getting into a...

If you hate challenging games, stay away from Spelunky. If you hate charming retro graphics, or the idea of perma-death, don't get Spelunky. It's not for everyone, but anyone who walks into the depths of the game's caves with an open mind will come out...

It's the slow accretion of experience and progress that makes each death in Spelunky so much more meaningful than indistinguishable death number 4536 in some Call of Duty firefight, and it will keep you coming back to the game for a long while.

Spelunky is for the West what Cave Story represents for Japan: the maximum expression of the indie philosophy. You shouldn't ask yourself if you want to play it. You absolutely have to, if you haven't yet.

There's something to be said for challenges that can't be plowed through with bullish persistence. Spelunky is demanding of reflexes, but it also tests judgment. With death one misstep away, every decision, no matter how small, feels profound.
