Star Ocean: The Last Hope - Xbox 360 review at Thunderbolt Games

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is not a hugely serious videogame. It strives to be, of course - and is at times successful - but it never reaches the narrative heights of something like BioShock, or contains the kind of scenes prevalent in the Team ICO...

Star Ocean: The Last Hope [Xbox 360]

It's hard to believe, looking at the Xbox 360's line up, that once the console was suffering from a lack of JRPGs. In the past year or so it has seen a huge surge in titles: Blue Dragon, Enchanted Arms, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata and The Last Remnant...

Interesting complex story that's epic in scale ; Characters are well wrote ; Battle system is unique, strategic and overall fun for the entire lenght of the title ; Majority of areas are visually stunning ; Huge amount of content

Some areas feel copied and pasted from other JRPGs ; Characters are all JRPG stereotypes ; Severe lack of save points throughout

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is one of the best JRPGs on Microsoft's console, bursting with originality and charm. But too much feels tied down by familiar territory and stereotypes to be as good as it should have.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

There was a time when the next installment of the Star Ocean series would have been a no-brainer for release on the PS3. After all, Sony published the second Star Ocean title, SO: Second Story, the first in the series to even appear in the US, and Sony...

Amazingly nice eye-candy graphics, though not quite bleeding-edge ; The action battle system has sufficient depth to keep most folks interested for the duration ; The story, once you get past the somewhat silly premise, is involving and enjoyable

The camera/movement system is hard to keep stable during exploration ; Feels disconnected from the rest of the series ; Takes 30 minutes to let you do anything interactive, nearly an hour to your first real battle

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is not without its minor faults, but the strengths of the game are far more noticable.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

tri-Ace's Star Ocean is one of my personal favorite RPG series–I own every game in it, including the Japan-only GBC title, Star Ocean Blue Sphere. Going with that mindset into Star Ocean: The Last Hope, I was simultaneously blown away and disappointed...

All-in-all, Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a tri-Ace title. It's amazingly fun and amazingly flawed in many ways. Just about every system in the game is breakable, but that's a tri-Ace hallmark. It's a game that most RPG fans will find to be a worthy...

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

The Last Hope is a prequel to the entire Star Ocean series that precedes it. The story recounts humanity's journey in the aftermath of an apocalyptic third World War and its search for a new home world. The nuclear war has left Earth's surface ravaged...

Deep character development ; Great visuals ; Real Time Member Change ; Replay value

Pacing and extra long cut-scenes ; Voice acting is weak ; Uninspired main character

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is not a genre-defining title but it is a solid RPG and pretty darn fun to play. If you push past the initial minor frustrations, drawn out cut scenes and get yourself to the meat of the game, you won't be disappointed....

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Who knew that all it would take for me to enjoy a Star Ocean game was fancy 3D graphics and a fast-moving plotline? After recently playing through both Star Ocean: First Departure and The Second Story, I had my doubts about this fourth installment. I'm...

Square Enix really outdid themselves with Star Ocean: The Last Hope. This is a huge, gorgeous adventure with a memorable storyline and plenty of cool twists. Better yet, it has some of the most compelling combat sequences ever found in a Japanese...

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

A great prequel for the series that has some of the best RPG combat I've ever played.

The music is nice, but I can honestly say I wasn't really blown away by the score. A lot of the cutscene music felt generic to me, and the only real standouts were the basic loops when you're exploring the planets. Even the battle music felt pretty...

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the fourth installment in a series of RPGs by developer tri-Ace and publisher Square-Enix, though it actually serves as a prequel to the entire series' timeline. Truth be told this was my first experience with the series...

If you're already a fan of the RPG genre, this will both disappoint and entice you but in the end leave you satisfied. If you're an RPG newbie, you'll more than likely be a little turned off to the genre, not quite getting an accurate depiction of what...

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Review

Edge Maverick you'll find is not too unlike many other characters in the genre – he's young, has a slightly raspy voice, is almost fresh out of puberty and has a strong desire to rid the world of all things bad and evil. But, he understands he's not...
