The Darkness II

There's no getting passed it -- as much as I enjoyed The Darkness back in 2007, it was a heavily flawed game. For every thing it did right, it had an equally as debilitating flaw. The combat was fun, even if the gunplay was a little unpolished; the...

Inugami has a katana, which he can use to slice and dice his way through waves of goons not unlike the way Jackie does with his Darkness arm. Then you have J.P Dummond, who wields a staff that can lift enemies from their cover. There's nothing wrong...

Darkness 2, The

I've always had a problem that comic book games never seem to look like...well, comic books, but The Darkness 2 rectifies that problem with a unique visual style of hand crafted backgrounds with cell shaded characters on top of them.

The best part of the trainer is the unlimited essence cheat, which allows you access to abilities and power earlier on in the game, but you'll also find yourself using the unlimited ammo and health pretty frequently as well.

The Darkness II

The Darkness II was a game that I hoped would be good, but had very low expectations for its actual quality. Much to my surprise, Digital Extremes

The Darkness II is not a perfect game. It’s short, the co-op is not as impressive as the single-player, the bosses are tedious, and some of the combat scenarios are poorly designed, but the game is extremely well-paced and can be great fun to play when...

Great storytelling ; Visceral and brutal ; Combat is fantastic ; Love the art style

Enemy types repeat far too often ; Story takes a bit to warm up ; Short campaign

The original Darkness game seemingly came out of nowhere and impressed a lot of people, myself included. It was a new take on the FPS genre that told a dark story without sacrificing gore in favor of competent gameplay. Some five years later, we have a...

Light-averse tentacle creatures need love too.

The Darkness II’s salvation, again, is Jenny. The game has Jackie spending much more time with his lost love. These visions of past dates and formative moments aren’t cheap; they’re actual character-building, leveraging the power of proximity and...

The Darkness II Review

The last we saw of mob-boss-to-be Jackie Estacado, he had been taken over by the Darkness, an evil demon force that uses a pair of monstrous limbs to do the bidding of whoever possesses it. But somehow, Jackie has managed to contain this presence...

For The Darkness II’s art style, Digital Extremes opted for a funky sort of look with cel-shaded characters. Not that that’s a bad thing, but there are times that the models look the same, especially when you’re ripping them apart the same way....

The Darkness II Review

It may not end up being the best shooter of 2012, but it could very well be the one that makes you feel the most powerful.

Despite some problems with polish and a story that takes time to develop into something great, The Darkness II ends up as an early treat in the new year. The narrative elements help the pacing considerably, breaking up Jackie’s engaging and brutal...

Just when I thought I was out...

Excellent storytelling; Excellent gameplay, mixes shooting and Darkness; Left me wanting more...; Co-op mixes unique characters and powers; Blood, gore, action, look great in comic-book style; Stellar voice acting

A lot more...; Seriously, this game is short; ...but that's short too

But it can be hard to suggest players who haven't already been caught by one of the Darkness tentacles to drop a hefty amount of money on a game this short. If you can, wait until you've got some extra credit lying around or until the game goes on...

The Darkness II Review

The Darkness II is not the revelation its predecessor was, but ripping up occultists with your demon arms is a blast anyway.

Demonic arms + solid gunplay = fun times ; Unusual, creepy story that's more than just cheap shocks ; Skill tree gives the action some diversity ; Excellent voice acting and sound effects

Incredibly short campaign ; Linear levels and second-rate AI make for predictable encounters ; Run-of-the-mill co-op missions lack challenge

You should turn off those notifications at the first opportunity if you want to get the most out of The Darkness II. (Be sure to also turn off the annoying tutorial reminders that frequently appear, reminding you how to play the game even when you've...
