HDMI upconversion to 720p and 1080i resolutions; can play back DivX files; solid disc compatibility; relatively inexpensive.
Cannot deliver full DVD resolution over HDMI; HDMI output cannot pass signals from VCR.
The inexpensive Samsung DVD-V9650 DVD/VCR combo unit has an HDMI output, a nice design, and DivX compatibility, but its soft video quality falls short of other HDMI players we've tested.

Stellar recording quality with VHS-to-DVD transfers, especially in LP mode; custom speed settings for Flexible Recording; includes front-panel DV input and rear-panel S-Video input; outputs VHS via component video; chases playback with DVD-RAM discs.
Cannot place chapter stops on DVD+R/-R/-RW discs; poor editing options; no IR blaster.
While its inability to place chapter stops on DVDs is a bummer, the capable Panasonic DMR-ES40V dubbing deck shines in most other areas.

Combo A/V receiver, DVD player, and VCR; affordable price tag; two-way satellites; progressive video output; AM/FM tuner.
Sub doesn't pack enough wallop; balky remote.

Commercial-skip feature in VCR mode; progressive-scan output; solid MP3 support.
Bulky design; awkward interface.
If you can overlook the design and interface drawbacks, this combo deck has some nifty VCR features and progressive-scan output for owners of HD-ready TVs.

Nice design; decent video performance; good price.
Occasional onscreen artifacts.
With a stylish look and solid performance, the XBV243 stands out from the rest of the DVD/VCR combo pack.

Relatively slim design; clean front panel; one-touch copying of DVD-R content to VHS; full suite of outputs.
Less than ideal remote; menu system could be better; no MP3 support; slightly overpriced.
With a higher price and fewer features than what you'll find on competing players, you'd be better off with Samsung's DVD-V1000.
