LG KF700

LG KF700

By Ross Catanzariti

Responsive and well laid out interface, shortcut dial, HSDPA-capable, Web browser with pan and scroll

Standard camera, display a little narrow, proprietary headphone jack

The KF700 is an admirable handset when you consider it isn't positioned in the top echelon of the market. We like where LG is heading with its Touch series, and the KF700 is certainly an excellent example of this.

HTC P3470

HTC P3470

By Ross Catanzariti

Built-in GPS with CoPilot Live 7 software, compact design, Windows Mobile 6

Lack of 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, recessed display, no 3.5mm headphone jack

The P3470 is an interesting release, but the lack of both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity will hinder its appeal, despite the inclusion of a GPS receiver.

Nokia 3500 classic

Nokia 3500 Classic

By Ross Catanzariti

Simplistic but stylish design, decent features list, impressive keypad and controls, user interface, Bluetooth, microSD card slot

Poor resolution display, 2.5mm headphone jack, average camera

The 3500 Classic is compact, stylish and easy to use. If you're after a basic mobile phone containing all of the basics and a little more, this is one of the best options out there.

Sony Ericsson W890 / W890i

Sony Ericsson W890i

By Ross Catanzariti

Build quality, superb design, HSDPA-capable, 2GB Memory Stick Micro (M2), A2DP Bluetooth, TrackID, SensME

3.2-megapixel camera lacks flash and autofocus

A stylish, classy exterior with excellent build quality, just 10mm thin and boasting an superior keypad and controls despite its compact size. Add HSDPA support and an excellent user interface to the mix and the W890i is almost perfect.

Palm Treo 500v

Palm Treo 500

By Ross Catanzariti

Design; comfortable keyboard; A2DP Bluetooth; solid, if not outstanding features list

No Wi-Fi, no standard 3.5mm headphone jack, regular WM6 interface

The Palm Treo 500 remains a solid handset, but the tailored interface of its Vodafone exclusive brother would have been a nice inclusion

HTC Touch Dual (P5500)

HTC Touch Dual 850

By Ross Catanzariti

Improved TouchFLO interface, Next G HSDPA capable, stylish design, upgraded processor and memory, QWERTY keyboard

No Wi-Fi, proprietary headphone and charging jack

The HTC Touch Dual 850 sports a QWERTY keyboard rather than the standard nine-key layout. An improved TouchFLO interface, HSDPA capabilities over Telstra's Next G network and a fast processor combine to make this an excellent smartphone.

Sony Ericsson Z750 / Z750i / Z750a

Sony Ericsson Z750i

By Ross Catanzariti

Stylish design, HSDPA-capable, access to full suite of Next G content and applications, external OLED display

No real outstanding features, flip mechanism

The Z750i is a solid, but far from outstanding phone. Its 'Blue Tick' rating means it should appeal to those in rural areas but for the rest of us, there are certainly better choices not based on a design that's already a few months old.

ASUS M530w

ASUS M530w

By Ross Catanzariti

Design, scroll wheel, build quality, Wi-Fi, interface speed

No 3.5mm headphone jack, no HSDPA

The M530w is a competent, if not outstanding smartphone with a reasonable features list. It doesn't wow, but handles most jobs with a minimum of fuss.

LG KG290

LG's KG290 is an ideal phone for an entry-level user thanks to a decent features list and a compact design.

Sony Ericsson S500 / S500i

Sony Ericsson S500i

By Andrew Kliem

At this price the S500i is reasonable value, but it doesn't boast any outstanding features. Its design should appeal, but the keypad and controls may pose some problems.

Stylish design, low price, nice MP3 player

Flimsy build, cramped keypad, basic camera

While it isn't the most feature-filled phone on the market, considering the price, Sony Ericsson's S500i is an attractive buy for those on a budget. Just keep in mind the flimsy design, which may cause problems if you aren't careful.
