iRiver Mplayer (1GB)

iRiver Mplayer (1GB)

By MP3.com Staff

The Iriver Mplayer offers a fun and unique design that is easy to use, and music sounds good.

The Iriver Mplayer has no display and thus few features, and it doesn't seem to be very durable.

The Iriver Mplayer isn't necessarily the best option for young children, but it's a swell-sounding music player for Mickey Mouse fans of all other ages.

IRiver E100

iRiver E100

By MP3.com Staff

The iRiver E100 is packed with pretty much every feature in the book--photo and video playback, an FM radio, all recording capabilities, compatibility with both Windows and Mac, extensive audio file format support, bookmarking, microSD card expansion, eve...

The iRiver E100 has a cheap, plastic feel, and the interface is very basic. The clickpad is not totally responsive, and some navigation is sluggish. D-Click navigation isn't optimal for the control pad setup. No integrated podcast support.

The iRiver E100 is a decent choice for people who want a ton of features in an easy-to-use package, but if you're after speedy navigation or top-notch sound quality, look elsewhere.

Sony Walkman NWZ-A820 Series

Sony Walkman NWZ-A828K (8GB)

By MP3.com Staff

The Sony NWZ-A820 Walkman MP3 player series offers high-quality music, photo, and video playback, along with built-in Bluetooth audio streaming, EX-style earphones, and phenomenal battery life.

The Sony NWZ-A820 series doesn't come cheap, and it lacks an FM radio, voice recording, memory expansion, and a standard USB connection.

The Sony NWZ-A820 is the best sounding, best-looking Walkman series yet, and the inclusion of Bluetooth audio makes it a top choice for cable-hating audio enthusiasts.

The Samsung S5 has a small screen and a proprietary USB connection, and it's pricier than most other flash MP3 players. The lack of tactile controls may turn off some users, and there are no dedicated volume buttons. Videos must be in Samsung's proprietar...

The Samsung S5 is an MP3 player with a fun interface and excellent sound quality; the screen is a bit small, but this player is still a great choice if you want to share your tunes at the drop of a dime.

Archos 705 WiFi

Archos 705 WiFi (160GB)

By MP3.com Staff

The Archos 705 WiFi is a portable video player with a gigantic screen, killer audio, video, and photo format support, an attractive user interface, Flash games, wireless movie rentals, and one of the best Web browsers on a mobile device. Unlike other Arch...

705 WiFi is just too big for daily use. It's also heavy, the screen resolution could be sharper, there's no tactile control for volume, and the Web browser costs extra.

Archos 705 WiFi is the biggest, baddest PVP on the market. What you get in screen size, however, you pay for in portability and picture quality.

Mobiblu B2

Mobiblu B2

By MP3.com Staff

The MobiBlu B2 offers an external speaker for sharing tunes as well as other desirable features, such as an FM radio, photo and video playback, and voice-recording capability. It has a relatively large screen and a compact design.

The MobiBlu B2's construction feels cheap. The player isn't compatible with DRM-protected files. The controls aren't very easy to use, and the folder tree navigation style may not appeal to all users. Photos look grimy, and you can't view them while simult...

The MobiBlu B2 is a compact MP3 player with several appealing extras and decent sound quality, but the Creative Zen V Plus matches, or beats it in almost every regard--and costs less.

Slacker Portable

Slacker Portable Player

By MP3.com Staff

The Slacker Portable Player offers an innovative way to discover new music on the go, and its screen is extra large and full of information. The interface is intuitive (minus the touch strip), and the service that complements the device is a bargain.

The Slacker Portable Player is large and doesn't feel as high quality as the price point suggests. The device also suffers from background hiss during the playback of stations and awkward placement of volume controls.

The Slacker Portable Player isn't the best player for audiophiles and control freaks, but its excellent accompanying service makes it perfect for those who want their music provided to them for very minimal effort and cost.

Insignia Kix 1GB MP3 Player

Insignia Kix 1GB MP3 Player

By MP3.com Staff

The Insignia Kix is inexpensive, has a simple plug-and-play design, and offers a couple of useful extras. Each player comes with three interchangeable USB covers in different colors.

The Insignia Kix suffers from a stiff control pad and cheap overall feel, and bass response is lacking.

The Insignia Kix is a viable option for the younger set or as a secondary MP3 player for the gym. It's a cheap and simple device with decent sound quality.

Cowon iAudio Q5

Cowon Q5W

By MP3.com Staff

The Cowon Q5W portable video player boasts robust video features, high-quality audio playback, and includes a Wi-Fi-enabled Internet browser, Bluetooth audio streaming, component and composite video output, MSN Messenger, and built-in speakers.

The Cowon Q5W is heavy, expensive, awkward to navigate, difficult to configure for wireless Internet, and the optional GPS cradle costs as much as a standalone GPS device.

The Cowon Q5W aims to do everything a gadget-aholic may want in a portable video player. Unfortunately, its confusing dual interface and high price hold it back from greatness.
