Blue laser hardware is gradually becoming more affordable. On the consumer side, Blu-ray players such as the Samsung BD-P1000 are starting to approach the $500 price point. HD-DVD players are dipping below $300 for 1080i units like the Toshiba HD-A2, and...
Lowest-cost PC Blu-ray burner. Good DVD burning performance for a Blu-ray unit.
Slower DVD burning than dedicated DVD burners. Pricey. BD media pricey.
If you need a Blu-ray burner, the Lite-On LH-2B1S is the most affordable unit currently on the market. But the price of BD media is too pricey for frequent use.
The OWC Mercury Pro SW-5582 external Blu-ray drive can store massive amounts of data, but getting movies to play easily from it is another story.
Affordable external Blu-ray solution. BD-R burns are much faster than with first-generation Blu-ray drives. FireWire and USB ports.
Single-layer DVD write speeds are half the speeds of current DVD drives. A big hassle to get a Blu-ray movie to play. Software not included.
Good single solution for multiple PCs, but getting the drive to play Blu-ray movies will require HDCP compliance from your PC components.

The LaCie d2 is a pricey external Blu-ray drive with a good software bundle.
Good software bundle.
Requires HDCP-compliant PC components and monitor to watch current Blu-ray titles. Hefty price.
An expensive external Blu-ray drive that caters to a multiple-PC environment, but read LaCie's PC requirements before watching a Blu-ray title.

Burns Blu-ray BD-E single layer media. Can act as a DVD recorder. Can read all Blu-ray formats.
DVD burning is slow. Only burns to single layer BD-E media. Cannot read or write to CD media. Expensive.
The BDR-101A is a first-generation Blu-ray recorder suitable for authoring Blu-ray and DVD discs, albeit slowly. However, its limitations and extremely high price make it useful only to a select audience.
