Creative Vado

Sleek and slim design. Low price. Large screen. Rechargeable battery. Easy-to-use software.

Poor uploaded video quality. Subpar mic.

Creative's Vado improves on its prototype, the Flip Ultra mini camcorder, in a number of ways, including design and price, but its choppy video quality may be too much to overlook.

Hitachi DZ-HS300A

Hitachi DZHS300A

By Terry Sullivan

Two formats for recording video. Decent video quality and performance.

Confusing menus and functions. Unintuitive controls. Terrible still capabilities.

This camcorder is competitive because it can record video to either an internal hard drive or burn directly to DVD, but the confounding menu system and awkward controls are disappointing.

Sony DCR-DVD508

Sony Handycam DCR-DVD508

By Terry Sullivan

Excellent standard-definition video quality. Easy to use. Nicely structured menus. Shoots 6-megapixel still pictures.

Slow still-image performance. It's not HD.

This 10X optical Handycam should definitely be on your short list if you're looking for a SD camcorder that doesn't skimp on quality.

Sanyo Xacti HD1

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2

By Terry Sullivan

Compact. Good color. Very good digital still images. Very portable.

Video quality could be better. Last year's nice OLED screen not on this year's model. Shutter lag evident in still shots. No optical-image stabilization.

Although it's still chasing the competition, this tiny HD camcorder offers decent video capturing and still-image capabilities, all in one handy package.
