Toshiba Satellite X205

The Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 is an attractively priced SLI gaming laptop that should bring new gaming talent out of the woodwork.

Appeals to budget gamers. SLI configuration. Copious amount of RAM. Fast-spinning hard drives. Six USB ports. Sporting a new Penryn processor.

Cumbersome-looking. Small battery.

The Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 may not have performance bragging rights, but the reasonable price tag should bring new gaming talent out of the woodwork.

Alienware Area-51 m7700

Though the Alienware Area-51 ALX produced some impressive benchmark test numbers, it couldn't knock the less-expensive HP Blackbird 002 off its perch.

Strong, high-resolution gaming performance. Improved chassis build quality. Very little bloatware.

Expensive. Noisy.

The Alienware Area-51 ALX is a solid desktop with good performance across the board. But there are other, less-expensive choices out there that rival if not surpass its performance.

The Gateway MC7803u surprises us with its trendy, stylish design and low, $1,000 price.

Magnificent design. The backlit keyboard and touch-sensitive media buttons are superb features. Exterior is attractive. Gorgeous glass screen. Excellent price point.

Heaviest 16-inch laptop on the market. Limited screen resolution.

MSI Megabook GX720

MSI GX720

By Cisco Cheng

The MSI GX720 is a decent media center laptop, with some sweet gaming performance thrown in.

Design lives up to gaming and luxury standards. Built-in ATSC TV tuner. BD-ROM bundled. Very good performance. Decent battery life for a desktop replacement laptop. Inexpensive.

Lacks retail presence. Improperly marketed as a gaming laptop.

HP Compaq 6930p

HP EliteBook 6930p

By Cisco Cheng

With its rugged good looks, fast performance, and ample features, the HP EliteBook 6930p can't help but draw comparisons to the Lenovo ThinkPad T400, an Editors' Choice laptop that it almost keeps pace with.

Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (2006)

Apple's MacBook Pro is a design marvel, but you can find better features elsewhere for less.

Now less than one inch thick. Design has no equal. Switchable graphics. Gesture and clickable touchpad. Still the lightest 15-inch laptop. Gorgeous glass screen. Illuminated keyboard. Excellent typing experience.

Lacks a built-in media card reader. Features aren't the strongest. Pricey.

Fujitsu LifeBook S6520

Fujitsu LifeBook S6520

By Cisco Cheng

The Fujitsu LifeBook S6520 is a rare system that weighs less than 4 pounds and houses a 14-inch widescreen.

14-inch widescreen on a 4-pound laptop. Good performance scores. Full-size keyboard. Standard-voltage processor. Built-in optical drive that doubles as modular bay for an extra battery.

Lacks 3G options. Lid is prone to smudges and scratches. Higher resolution would be nice.

Apple MacBook Core 2 Duo (2006)

Are a tweaked design and upgraded manufacturing process enough to make the new MacBook a must-have?

Aluminum design is absolutely gorgeous. Half a pound lighter than the original MacBook. Glass screen adds to its overall sex appeal. Unique touchpad that incorporates the mouse click. Adds gesture capabilities to touchpad. Excellent typing experience. Imp...

Omitting a media card reader hurts point-and-shooters. No ExpressCard slot for expansion. No more Firewire. Smaller battery than the original MacBook.
