Slingbox PRO-HD

Slingbox PRO-HD

By Jamie Lendino

As one of the best performing, easiest-to-use media extenders out there, the Slingbox PRO-HD takes over the Editors' Choice crown that had belonged to its predecessor, the Slingbox Pro. It's a snap to set up, and it works exactly as advertised—two ra...

Streams HD-quality video over a home network and near-HD-quality content over the Internet (provided sufficient bandwidth is available). Can finally pause and resume live TV. New Program Guide is a welcome addition. Well-executed software player. Supports...

Program Guide and Setup Assistant contain a few rough edges. Still no Wi-Fi, DVR capability, or HDMI input. Ties up the television the device is attached to.

Insignia NS-DXA1-APT

Insignia NS-DXA1-APT

By Tim Gideon

There's nothing fancy about the Insignia NS-DXA1-APT. It allows your old TV to receive digital broadcasts, provided you buy an inexpensive HDTV antenna.

Easy to set up. Remote and menus are easy to navigate. Essential cables included.

Limited connectivity. Guide shows only one program ahead of current.

Apex DT250

Apex DT250

By Tim Gideon

The Apex DT250 digital TV tuner offers more connectivity than its competition—including a smart antenna input that could be useful in low-reception areas.

More connectivity options than in rival models. Easy to set up. Includes smart antenna input. Less expensive than some competitors.

Menus are easy to navigate, but not easy on the eyes.

Netflix Player by Roku

Netflix Player by Roku

By Tim Gideon

This Roku player streams movies from your Netflix queue straight to your television sans PC.

Affordable. Provides uninterrupted standard-definition movie streams. No PC necessary. Easy setup. Automatically syncs your Instant Queue.

Top-of-the-line model, but lacks Bluetooth phone interface and voice commands found on less expensive Maestros. No auto-zoom or auto-volume.

For those looking to augment an unlimited Netflix subscription, this set-top box from Roku is affordable and easy to use. Here's hoping the movie selection becomes broader.

Linksys DMA2200

Home Networking 101

By Oliver Rist

There are a number of new media extender products arriving at this year's CES, but Linksys was good enough to give us a sneak peek at its new DMA2200 before the show. The DMA2200 is a prime example of what you can expect to see from the Windows-oriented m...

Easy config and network setup. Dual-band wireless. Lots of Internet media compatibility.

Wireless high-def traffic reliable only at 5-GHz wireless-n. Needs a Vista PC on the network to function. High price.

The Linksys DMA2200 media extender is a solid entry into the Vista-compatible media extender space. There will be more of these from other vendors, but the DMA2200 differentiates itself with dual-band Wi-Fi, an DVD player, and loads of Internet media plug...

IntelliTouch Eos Wireless

Call it a poor man's Sonos, the Eos is an iPod dock with an aux in and very few functions other than the big one--wireless transmission.

Strong wireless range. Works through doors. Crisp sound. Dock controls up to four wireless speakers.

Not much bass. No visual for mute on dock. Short cables on huge AC adaptors. Membrane remote has limited functionality.

Call it a poor man's Sonos, the Eos is an iPod dock with an aux in and very few functions other than the big one—wireless transmission.

NETGEAR Digital Entertainer HD EVA8000

Bridging the TV/PC Gap

By Tim Gideon

Suddenly, with the advent of Apple TV, it seems everyone wants a wireless media extender to stream files from a computer to the TV. Apple TV is easy to set up, fairly small, and an excellent product for iTunes users. By contrast, the Netgear Digital Enter...

Very versatile media extender. Plays lots of DRM-protected files. Can access YouTube and Flickr over the Internet. Records TV via your computer. Plays content directly off USB drives.

Crashes more than Billy Joel. The complex setup process may prove tricky even for networking pros. Interface graphics and device itself are ugly. No hard drive. Can't auto-update its media library.

Setting it up was a nightmare, the device crashed easily, and it isn't attractive, to boot. Still, when it's up and running, the product has an impressive feature set. If Apple TV is for the iPod-familiar, hands-off user, then the Netgear is for the patie...

Logitech Wireless DJ Music System

This Bluetooth-based wireless audio solution is best suited to Windows users who want to stream music wirelessly from their PC to their stereo without having to be at their PC to control the music.

Remote is easy to use. Works with all digital audio, including protected content. Reasonably good sound quality. Supports up to four wireless receivers. Doesn't require a network. Very interference-resistant.

Interface is a bit sluggish. You can stream to only one receiver at a time. Software is Windows-only.

Slingbox Pro

Slingbox Pro

By Eliot Van Buskirk

Nearly as easy to use as a TV. Video quality improved over previous version. Adapts to available bandwidth to maximize video quality. Connects to up to four home-theater components. No monthly fee.

Home uplink speed and Internet congestion can limit your video quality during remote viewing. Works only with Windows handhelds and PCs. HD connection improves video quality only if you watch on your home network. Can't pause or store programs unless you...

The place-shifting Slingbox Pro is a great way—especially for DVR users—to watch a virtual version of your home television on PCs or Windows Mobile devices.

ITVN Broadband TV (DV200S)

ITVN Broadband TV (DV200S)

By Lance Ulanoff

Easy setup. Decent image quality. Clean interface. Component-video out. Starz and Encore content now available. Small, low-profile box. Ethernet port built in.

Occasional network-throughput issues. Content not all it could or should be. No storage. No HD programming. No wireless connectivity. Content search not available in most areas.

ITVN's service and tiny set-top box provide Internet-based, on-demand content for your television set today, and the quality isn't bad.
