Logitech Pure-Fi Dream

Logitech Pure-Fi Dream

By Tim Gideon

Logitech's Pure-Fi Dream leads the pack in alarm clock/iPod docks.

Powerful speakers. Strong bass response. Rarely distorts. Easy-to-set alarms. Useful, backlit remote. Motion-controlled snooze feature.

Works with iPhone, but not as gracefully as other docks. No video out.

Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile

Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile

By Jamie Lendino

The stereo Bluetooth-enabled Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile delivers impressive sound quality and battery life for such a small design.

Stellar battery life. Clear, transparent sound quality at moderate volumes. Includes speakerphone controls and 3.5mm auxiliary input. Plenty of accessories in the box.

Expensive. No low-end punch. Sounds muddy over Bluetooth if the source device doesn't support Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.

The Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile is a flexible and solid-sounding Bluetooth speaker. While its diminutive size precludes any true bass response, it sounds about as good as it can, given the design constraints.

JBL On Stage IIIP

10 Ultra

By Tim Gideon

JBL's On Stage IIIP is the second Apple approved speaker dock, which bears the official "Works with iPhone" sticker. (Altec Lansing's $200 T612 was the first.) At $170, the On Stage IIIP is a reasonably priced and delivers quality audio for its size. Sinc...

Works with iPhone in phone mode. iPod menu navigation on remote. Impressive audio quality considering its size.

No rechargeable batteries. Carrying case not included. No video out.

The reasonably priced On Stage IIIP works with both iPhone and iPods, providing a full sound considering its relatively compact frame, but it has some shortcomings.

Edifier e3350

Edifier e3350

By Tim Gideon

The e3350 stereo speakers from Edifier are good-looking and won't cost you a fortune, but they suffer from some serious bass distortion.

Crisp, well-defined performance in the mid and high frequencies. Aux inputs and headphone jack on wired controller.

Subwoofer stumbles on deep bass. Speakers not upward-angled. Left and right speaker cables are hardwired.

The Edifier e3350 stereo speaker set looks snazzy and delivers well-defined mids and highs. But when deep bass enters the equation, the subwoofer simply can't handle it.

Sony SRS-ZX1

Sony SRS

By Tim Gideon

look, the Sony SRS-ZX1 PC stereo speaker system isn't likely to be mistaken for the smaller, minimalist-looking Bose Computer MusicMonitor. Yet the two speaker sets-both of which lack a subwoofer and sell for $400-are exact competitors. The Bose set gets...

Nice clarity in mid-to-high frequencies at moderate volumes. Removable grilles show off cool driver design.

Too expensive. Can't handle deep bass at moderate-to-high volumes. Speakers are not angled upward. Remote offers only volume and power controls.

Since Sony's SRS-ZX1 speakers can't handle deep bass at high volumes, they're better suited for the office than for rocking your next party. And although the even audio response at moderate levels is pleasant, this set just isn't worth $400.
