Hercules Dualpix Exchange webcam

Cheap, does what it sets out to do

Software limited, no wide-angle lens, quality not great

You aren't buying this for its quality, its bundled software or its design, you're buying this because it's cheap and if you're alright with that, then you won't go far wrong

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000

Picture quality, software features, sound, stand

Cable not long enough, expensive, not Mac compatible

While this is one of the more expensive webcams on the market, the build quality and performance are worth the expense

Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000

Relatively easy to install, good picture quality

Insists on trying to load Microsoft Live during install to use "full functionality", lead not long enough to plug into machine under desk, slightly fiddly stand/clip arrangement

An average webcam for video communication, offering good picture quality. Minor niggles (stand and lead length) let the device down slightly

Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision

Very crisp and clear image, good in-built speaker and mic

Expensive, large stand

If you've moved on from the cheaper options and entry-level webcams, the Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision is as it says on the box, Ultra Vision.

LOGITECH QUICKCAM COMMUNICATE STX

Video effects that allow you to add graphics to your images, good image quality, fairly wide angle, works well in low light

Rubberised stand is unwieldy

The Logitech webcam is a good all round model that has some nice features to it, especially when dealing with low light

Creative Live! Cam Voice

Creative Live! Cam Voice

Skype certified, wide angle, headset included in the box, two mics to cutout background noise

Noise on images

Good sound, poor picture makes this a webcam that is perhaps more expensive than it should be

Philips SPC 900NC

Philips SPC 900NC webcam

Pixel Plus technology found in its TVs, easy to use, 90 frames per second capture rate in video mode

Automatic lighting adjustment gets confused at times, very narrow angle of view, stand fits uncomfortably on laptop screens.

The SPC 900NC offer good picture quality and a rich sound, however with no noise cancelling features you've got to make sure you are in a quiet room.
