Samsung SP-A800B

The adjustable front feet make it easier to straighten the image when the Samsung is destop-mounted

Impressive styling; Excellent colour and greyscale rendition; Calibration-friendly

Black levels could be better; No provision for keystone correction

Setting up the projector is straightforward. Samsung states that the SP-A800B has been 'designed to show images optimally on a 100-120in screen' - and funnily enough, my Unity-gain One fitted the bill nicely

Sony VPL-VW200

Despite delivering impressively bright while retaining good black levels, the Sony VW200 runs remarkably quietly

HDMI v1.3 connectivity; Exceptionally quiet; Good, basic image quality

Too many of its features seem to make pictures worse rather than better

Especially when you can get JVC's superior HD100 for considerably less

Dell 1800MP

This is a bright projector that impressed us with the clarity of images, as well as the size of them

Good quality images; Easy to set up; Bargain price

Bulky; Basic feature set

This is a bright projector that impressed us with the clarity of images, as well as the size of them. While the connections are kept to a minimum, this projector will suit any office or education establishment, as it's easy to set up and run

Panasonic PT-AE200E

Panasonic defends the AE2000E's design deficiencies by explaining that the model is aimed at serious home theatre buyers who don't want pretentious designs

Totally noiseless HD pictures; Good black levels; Quiet operation

Brutish design; Some colour inaccuracies; No 12V trigger

The quality of the optics though, given the low price point, is outstanding

sony vpl-vw60

At 11kgs, the VW60 is no lightweight, but it can still be ceiling-mounted

Very ---filmic--- picture; Great contrast; Runs quietly

Bulky; Very revealing of poor sources

It gives the Award-winning Marantz VP-15S1 a run for its money, and for around £2,000 less..

Epson EMP TW2000

The Epson TW2000 has some decent home cinema chops beneath the glossy exterior

Detail-rich images; Simple setup; Natural colour palette

Black levels could be better; Some horizontal motion blur

Overall, the TW2000 delivers a very credible picture. One to audition

Marantz VP-15S1

If the Marantz VP-15S1 is too heavy to ceiling-mount, you can just as easily plonk the weighty projector on a coffee table

Remarkable clarity and accuracy; excellent build quality; great processing

Heavy; six-segment colour wheel may produce rainbow effect

In the end though, it's the blistering image quality that's makes this projector a star

JVC DLA-HD100

For such a sophisticated projector, the HD100 is surprisingly straightforward to set up and use

Spectacular picture quality; Plenty of features; Attractive design; Fair price

Quite big; Doesn--'t have a 12V trigger output

With surprisingly little running noise for such a powerful machine, there isn't anything bad to say about the HD100's performance at all

epson emp-twd10

Four 5W speakers provide stereo and virtual surround sound

Versatile design; A cinch to set-up; DVD playback; Great value for money

HD picture lacks quality; Muted colour palette

A black hole approach to contrast ratio will disappointment home cinema connoisseurs. However if you're looking for an occasional - and portable - plug 'n' play home cinema, the D10 does a unique job

Acer P1265

It looks a treat, but it also has a few useful features

Elegant styling; Extensive connectivity; Quiet

Poor audio quality; No Keystone Correction

The image quality has been set for presentations, so is harsh and bright. This is typical for a DLP projector, but it works fine in a wide variety of settings. This is a good quiet projector that represents very fair value for money
