Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V

While you can get more zoom in a same-size camera from competitors, Sony makes up for it with a wealth of innovative features and clever in-camera software in the Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V.

Fast operation. Excellent image quality. Superior video recording (1080i60). Large, 3-inch LCD. Clever in-camera software for creating panoramic photos and reducing image noise. Integrated GPS and compass.

Competition offers more zoom in similar body size.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V

With its in-camera GPS, digital compass, wireless image and video sharing via TransferJet, accelerometer-driven panorama mode, and 1080i high-definition video capture in AVCHD format, it's easy to overlook the fact that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V...

Panorama, low-light, backlight correction modes ; GPS receiver and compass for geotagging ; Excellent color accuracy and low-light performance

No aperture-priority or shutter-priority modes ; Geotagging requires software on a Windows PC ; Images aren't always sharp

Don’t call Sony's GPS-enabled, feature-loaded DSC-HX5V a gimmick camera. It supplements its in-camera goodies with great image quality and terrific shooting modes.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V

Speedy shooting performance; compact, lightweight design; plenty of fun, useful features; very good low-light photo quality for a compact camera.

Soft photos, videos; limited manual controls; GPS can't quickly be powered on and off.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V has shooting options for solving common snapshot camera issues, but some users still won't be thrilled with the results.

Review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V

Don't call Sony's GPS-enabled, feature-loaded DSC-HX5V a gimmick camera. It supplements its in-camera goodies with great image quality and terrific shooting modes.

Those key strengths are thanks to three modes, all of which you can access quickly via a mode dial on top of the camera: Handheld Twilight mode, which snaps up to six images at different exposure settings in rapid succession and overlays them to create...

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5V – Review

Ashley Kramer tries out the new Cyber-shot and finds features galore but only average image quality.

Well-built and user-friendly ; Fun image modes ; GPS geotagging

Soft images, especially at high ISOs

Sony’s DSC-HX5V is a well-built, easy-to-handle camera with a comprehensive feature set. Image quality is good at the lowest ISO setting but softens as the ISO numbers climb, which sets back the overall rating, especially at this premium price point.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V is an excellent camera, delivering some of the best image quality we've seen.

Quality pictures and excllent results from our tests, good range of features, solid battery life under normal use

Geotagging works, but the function is tethered to your computer, no RAW shooting option, designed for more casual photographers not pros

Stacked to the rafters with features, the Sony HX5V's onboard geo-tagging capabilities and HD video are its main attractions

If the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V was a cellphone it would have been one of today's feature rich smartphones. There are an incredible amount of cool features to discover on this camera, not the least of which being its GPS geo-tagging capabilities, a...
