Canon DC40

Very good video quality. Decent 4-megapixel stills. Variety of special modes and features for both stills and video.

Significant shutter lag in auto mode. Video has a slight color cast. Reviewing still images is slow.

Although performance needs to improve, the Canon DC40 is one of the first miniDVD camcorders to let you shoot decent stills.

Canon DC40 Camcorder Review - Canon DVD Camcorders

The Canon DC40 is the new top-of-the-line model in the company's DVD line. Its specs are impressive - a 1/2.8 inch CCD, a relatively large lens, and just as many manual controls as the Optura line. But major differences between MiniDV and DVD...

Canon's Clever Camcorder

Finally, a camcorder that's compact, attractive, and easy to use—but the picture is a bit fuzzy.

By the time I got my hot little hands on the Canon DC40 I was ready for my adventure through camcorder-land to be over. Without kids running around, I have few must-record events in my life. After all, I can only have so much footage of my husband...

Crisp images, better than most DVD camcorders, good stills

Over-exposed images, poor battery life

The DC40 is an excellent DVD video camera.

Canon DC40

Great if you want it more for the video aspect and not still images. Somewhat time consuming trying to figure out all the options.

Great camera! Digital video quality is excellent

Still picture quality is ok, but for me, the color seems to bleed. For example I was on vacation last week and was taking some pictures where the wall was a pinkish color. When I took the pictures and reviewed them , everything had a pinkish tint to...

Good Camcorder!

Great camera for the price. I was deciding between this one, sony, and a panasonic model. I was really bummed out about the night mode performance... it maked it almost useless unless you want "blurvision". I've always loved anything that feels nice...

Automatic lens cover is great. Build quality! it feels very solidly constructed. Nice LCD and menuing. Auto focus is fast. Zooming in and out is very smooth, couple different speed options. Very nice to watch the footage on the camera when you fold the...

Can't Finalize disc unless plugged into the wall. Night mode sucks pretty bad. Video quality could be better. A couple buttons are hard to reach w/ one hand

Product Specifications

Like all of Canon's new camcorders, the DC40 is optimized for High Resolution true 16:9 widescreen recording, meaning the footage it records is suitable for playback on the very latest widescreen TV sets. The camcorder's High Resolution, wide color LCD screen and full color viewfinder ensure footage can be monitored during recording exactly as it would appear on a widescreen television. The Level Marker, provided on the LCD, is the best way to keep the horizon line perfectly in position, ensuring high impact panoramic shots every time. For playback on normal televisions, 4:3 shooting is available and easily selected with the push of a single button. Images recorded in widescreen can also be watched on a normal TV in letterbox format. The DC40's distinctive perpetual curve design reflects the natural ease-of-shooting that consumers have come to expect from DVD. To provide effortless handheld shooting, the body of the camcorder is conceived around a single, cylindrical shape. Ergonomically molded as a continuous and flowing curve, the DC40 is a natural fit in the hand, with controls clustered around the mode dial and positioned for intuitive and easy operation. The DIGIC DV image processor provides separate processing paths for video and still images, saved to ultra-compact MiniSD card. With DIGIC DV, the DC40 guarantees optimal color reproduction for each: together with a range of advanced digital photography functions, such as dedicated flash for stills and one-push direct printing, the camcorder is a high-capacity, multi-purpose digital imaging tool.
