JVC GR-D295

Compact; inexpensive; numerous manual settings; two batteries included.

Poor low-light performance; terrible stills; awkward menu controls.

A budget camcorder that offers a lot of zoom for the money, the JVC GR-D295 is worth consideration if you shoot mainly in brightly lit situations.

JVC GR-DZ7U

The JVC GR-DZ7U's solid video and still images would make it a good choice. But we expect a camera at this price to be easier to navigate.

Sharp-looking video and 1.9-megapixel effective still-image capture with built-in auto flash. USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) connectivity.

No hot shoe or headlight. Busy menu structure and membrane control panel are cumbersome.

JVC GR-DX307U

The JVC GR-DX307U offers an ergonomically pleasing compact design, a large LCD, and easy and flexible operation, but only decent video quality.

Compact design. Large (3-inch) LCD. LED headlight for low-light illumination. Easy to use. Flexible zoom control.

No accessory shoe. Subpar still-image capture quality. No manual-focus ring.

JVC GR-D33US

The GR-D33US is clunky to operate, but you might consider it for its good video quality and LED headlight, especially considering the price.

Good video, especially for the price. LED headlight for low-light illumination. 16x optical zoom.

Cumbersome controls. No hot shoe. Still images are bitmaps grabbed from video, not JPEGs, and they look dreadful.

JVC GR-D200US

The JVC GR-D200US is a compact, easy-to-use camcorder that shoots good video under normal conditions and takes up to 1,600-by-1,200 still images with a flash attachment.

On our studio tests, the GR-D200US was one of our better performers, producing remarkably clear videos with good skin tones, though other camcorders produced more accurate colors and better details. It was also one of the few camcorders free of color...

JVC GR-DX77

Enjoying pride of place as one of the smallest JVC camcorders this season, the DX-77 is a great little device to flip out of our coat pockets for those moments when we go out and paint the town red.

Small form factor ; Built-in video light ; IEEE1394 port

No accessory shoe slot ; Bottom tape loading ; Awkward LCD screen
