Mini review video: Our quick verdict on the Alcatel Idol 4S

The Alcatel Idol 4S' biggest selling point is not what came in the box, but the box itself, which doubles as a VR headset. The $350 (pre-order price) device comes with its own VR viewer so you can immediately start exploring immersive content when you...

Included VR goggles ; Affordable ; Loud, two-way speakers ; Bright, roomy display

Not as fast as competing phones ; Camera struggles in low light

Alcatel Idol 4s review: VR Gateway

We first caught a glimpse of the Alcatel Idol 4s at the MWC 2016, back in February, where, in keeping with Alcatel tradition, it was piled together with another basic Idol 4 model, as well as three other POP4 devices. Still, even amid the announcement...

Alcatel Idol 4S review

Alcatel's Idol 4S may come with a VR headset, but it's still not a good deal.

The Idol 4S has an excellent display, a near-stock Android experience, comes with a VR headset, and offers decent battery life. Unfortunately, it also has an unimpressive camera, odd button placements, and the VR content that is pre-loaded on the phone...

Alcatel Idol 4S With Windows 10 VR

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a sleek Windows phone packed with powerful hardware, productivity features, and virtual reality capabilities. It's a great choice for T-Mobile users who can overlook the relatively limited app selection.

Fast performance. Attractive design. Crisp AMOLED display. Dual front and back speakers. Fingerprint sensor, dual-band Wi-Fi, and expandable storage. Comes with VR headset. Supports Windows Continuum.

Windows Mobile still lacks many major apps. Just-average network performance.

For $470, the Alcatel Idol 4S is the best Windows phone you can buy, offering T-Mobile users a sleek build, powerful hardware, VR capabilities, and extensive productivity features. The only other new Windows phone on the market, the HP Elite x3, is a...

Alcatel's well-built Idol 4S lures you with freebies, but it stops short of unseating the OnePlus 3 as our favorite phone for the price

Alcatel throws everything at the Idol 4S except the kitchen sink. But it's not quite enough to be the best midrange phone.

Alcatel's Idol 4S comes packed with features and accessories. It has a high-end design and build, a great camera, impressive display and a convenience button dubbed the Boom Key.

The Boom Key needs finessing: It's easy to accidentally activate. The fingerprint scanner is small and sometimes difficult to engage.

With a premium build, good camera and free accessories in the box, Alcatel's Idol 4S is a solid midrange buy.

Alcatel Idol 4S

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a unique unlocked Android phone that comes with a VR headset and plenty of other accessories, offering good value for the price.

Relatively affordable. Attractive build. Gorgeous Quad HD display. Solid audio. Dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC. Latest Android software. Plentiful accessories.

Mediocre camera performance. Processor sometimes stutters while gaming. Heavy custom UI layer and some bloatware.

Conclusions The Alcatel Idol 4S is a sleek Android phone with a beautiful display and lots of useful accessories for the price. At $400, it's a relatively affordable way to get into VR, especially compared with buying a Gear VR and a pricey Samsung...

Alcatel Idol 4S review: it's hard out there for a phone

If you've thought of Alcatel at all, you've probably only thought of it as a budget smartphone maker, creating drops in a sea of low-end Android phones. But say you're Alcatel, how do you move up...

Great screen ; Fast performance ; Loud speakers

Design could use refinement ; Camera lacks stabilization ; VR experience is limited

Alcatel Idol 4S Review

The smartphone market is all too often one of extremes. It's easy to throw down $700 on a new phone and expect screaming performance, innovative new features, and an attractive design incorporating plenty of premium-feeling materials. It's also easy to...

Fantastic stereo speakers ; Bundled VR headset and JBL earbuds are nice additions ; Solid battery life and fast recharge times ; Snapdragon 652 processor doesn't let us down

Better phones available for the same price ; Boom key tries to do way too much ; Hit-and-miss fingerprint scanner ; Camera adequate at best

The plastic VR viewer is sturdy, has nice optics, and as we'd only expect from a custom model like this, fits the Idol 4S really well. But it's also little more than a fancy (and not even that fancy) Google Cardboard headset, lacking the extra...

Alcatel Idol 4S with Windows 10 review: $288 for a compelling business smartphone

It was just about a year ago that I last tried using Windows 10 Mobile with my March Madness experiment . Since then we have seen very little from Microsoft in the world of phones and I had no plans to try one again, especially after Microsoft killed...

High quality design, fit, and finish ; Attractive black and gold color scheme ; Inexpensive kit that includes a VR headset ; Ample internal storage and microSD card slot ; Loud dual stereo front speakers

Inconsistent Windows 10 experience with some apps ; Poor performance of fingerprint scanner ; Poor Bluetooth connectivity ; No water resistance ; Headset speaker too quiet on calls

Alcatel Idol 4S for Windows: A Virtual Disappointment

You interest in the Idol 4S will hinge largely on how much Continuum and virtual reality appeal to you. And while the Idol 4S can run Continuum for less than what it would cost you to get an HP Elite x3, you could save even more money, while trading...

Colorful screen ; Terrific audio ; VR headset comes with phone ; Continuum support on a sub-$500 phone

Camera takes overexposed photos ; Barely 6 hours of battery life ; Lack of apps for both phone and VR headset ; Dim display is hard to see in bright sunlight

The Idol 4S’s VR headset is unique for Windows phones, but not enough to make up for other flaws. Get an HP Elite x3 if you want a powerful Windows phone, or an inexpensive model if you want Continuum support.
