Caterpillar Cat S40 (Unlocked)

The unlocked Cat S40 from Caterpillar is a rugged phone that can take a beating, but you're trading screen resolution and speakerphone quality for durability.

Affordable. Rugged and durable with IP68 and MIL-810G rating. Expandable storage. Relatively trim design.

Low-resolution display. Quiet earpiece and low speakerphone volume make it less-than-ideal for calls in noisy environments. Poor camera.

Camera, Software, and Conclusions In natural use, it was impossible for me to take a crisp photo with the rear-facing 8-megapixel camera on the S40. No matter what I tried during test shooting, there was noise and blurriness in just about every photo...

CAT S40 Smartphone Review

Workhorse for rough jobs. The CAT S40 is a ruggedized smartphone that combines a very bright IPS screen and long battery life in a robust exterior. However, the hardware could have been more powerful. It is powered by a Qualcomm entry-level quad-band...

Very bright, homogeneous IPS screen, Good color reproduction, One-time free screen replacement in case of damage by drop, Very rigid build and impeccable processing, Balanced design, Dustproof and waterproof according to IP68, MIL-STD 810G certified,...

Mixed performance and slightly weak SoC, No high-speed ac Wi-Fi, Poor camera modules, Low screen resolution, Fragile SIM tray, High power consumption

The CAT S40 is a rather rugged device with rough corners. High-end specifications and compact dimensions are non-existent. It cannot get rough enough for the smartphone, which is underlined by the IP68 and MIL-STD 810G certifications and the robust...

Cat S40 Review: The Monster Truck of Phones

Built to withstand harsh environments, the S40 is certainly one of the most rugged phones we've tested, surviving everything from drops to dunks. It also offers solid battery life. But its lackluster cameras and low-res display make the $400 price...

Sturdy, waterproof design ; Good battery life ; Bright display

Mediocre cameras ; Low-res screen ; Sluggish performance

The sturdy Cat S40 is a waterproof and drop-proof Android phone, but its poor cameras and slow performance disappoint.

CAT S40 review: A rugged Android phone for the field

If we were still looking for evidence that smartphones have officially become a commodity, the line of ruggedized devices from iconic heavy equipment maker Caterpillar might just be that proof. We reviewed the Cat S40 Android phone to see if it offers...

We had to keep our review unit in working order so we weren't able to really torture it, but it did stand up just fine to some moderately rough drops, serious splashes, submersions and attempts to scratch the screen. We also made sure to hand it over...

Cat S40 review: Fort Knox guarding fool’s gold

The Cat S40 is one of the most durable phones we have ever tested. But do the insides justify that protection?

This phone is an absolute tank that can stand up to any torture you care to put it through. The rubberized/metal outer shell laughs in the face of danger. That is all great. But the performance hit from the insides make this phone hard to recommend....

Review: CAT S40

CAT is offering the rugged S40 to U.S. buyers directly online. This Android smartphone is designed to take a beating and still get you to your meeting on time. This phone is sold unlocked and works with networks such as those run by AT&T and T-Mobile....

The CAT S40 fulfills its mission: it's a rugged smartphone that handles bumps, bruises, and a bath, all while delivering a core Android smartphone experience.
