Nokia Lumia 520 review: does Nokia need another budget Windows Phone?

This phone just can't hold its own against the Lumia 620, and we don't think the modest savings are worth it.

Inexpensive ; Useful Nokia apps ; Mostly good components and construction

Battery life is short for a low-end phone ; Poor display ; Feels redundant beside the Lumia 620

It says a lot about the strength of Nokia's Lumia smartphones that they are often their own worst enemy. The Lumia 520 offers a full-fledged, fluid and friendly smartphone experience, but it sits in the shadow of the 620, just like the 920 makes life...

Nokia Lumia 520 review: Best buys

The Lumia 520 completes the roll call for Nokia's second generation of Microsoft-powered smartphones. Statistically, this means that every step of their product line, from 5** all the way to 9**, has been backed up by a fresh WP8-rocking alternative.

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support ; Quad-band 3G with 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA support ; 4.0" 16M-color IPS LCD display of WVGA resolution ; 5 megapixel autofocus camera with 720p@30fps video recording ; Windows Phone 8 OS ; 1 GHz dual-core Krait...

Common LCD lacks the punch of CBD ; A few prominent apps still missing, some apps incompatible due to 512MB RAM ; No front-facing camera ; No LED flash ; No system-wide file manager ; No lockscreen shortcuts ; Voice-guided SatNav license limited to a...

Nokia Lumia 520 (AT&T)

The pay-as-you-go Nokia Lumia 520 is a solid introductory smartphone on AT&T's Go Phone prepaid service, provided photography isn't a priority.

Cheap, compact, capable Windows Phone device. Easy-to-use interface.

No front-facing camera and a mediocre rear camera. Slow HSPA+ broadband. Same Windows Phone app-availability issues as ever.

Conclusions Were the Lumia 520 on AT&T's subscription service, this phone would be an awful deal. Its low price would soon vanish in higher monthly rates set to subsidize the purchase of pricier hardware. Instead, you can easily get by with a $60/month...

Review Nokia Lumia 520 Smartphone

Nokia's declaration of price. With an RRP of below 200 Euros (~$262), the Lumia 520 is a very affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone. The somewhat more expensive Lumia 620 has only been available for a short time. But which entry-level model should the...

Retail price, IPS screen, Micro SD slot, Satisfactory multimedia performance, Good battery runtime, High-quality build, The battery runtime has increased compared to the precursor

Screen's legibility in outdoor use, Camera quality, Moderate scope of delivery, The device would be better to use outdoors if the screen's maximum brightness were a bit higher. The app store also does not yet have much choice

Nokia Lumia 520 Review

Nokia seems to have nailed the ultra low-end of Windows Phones with the Lumia 520 on paper. Coming in a variety of jolly colors, it hits the sweet spot of price and productivity, employing a decent display, dual-core processor and a 5MP camera, all at...

Good all-around value for the money ; Free offline voice-guided navigation ; Screen can be operated with gloves

Subpar call quality

If you don't mind the sketchy call quality, Nokia has hit the nail on the head with its most affordable Windows Phone handset to date. It runs the newest version of Microsoft's mobile OS, has a zippy processor, expandable storage, and produces decent...

Nokia Lumia 520 Review
