Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review: Excellent, but still a tough sell

With its exceptional screen, solid performance and an improved S Pen, it's no surprise that Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 is its best big phone ever. It also doesn't hurt that it has one of the best dual camera setups we've ever seen. The problem is,...

Huge, beautiful display ; Excellent, water-resistant build ; Great dual camera ; S Pen is now more useful and fun

Very expensive ; Bixby can be flaky ; Not a huge improvement over the S8 Plus ; US version gets less storage than other regions

Chris is Engadget's senior mobile editor and moonlights as a professional moment ruiner. His early years were spent taking apart Sega consoles and writing awful fan fiction. That passion for electronics and words would eventually lead him to covering...

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review

From the dual camera and S Pen, to the gorgeous Infinity Display, the Galaxy Note 8 is an all-around fantastic phone.

Good dual cameras ; Daylong battery life ; Speedy performance ; Handy S Pen features ; Waterproof

Expensive ; Live Focus needs some work ; Poor fingerprint sensor placement

The Galaxy Note 8 is a great phone all-around phone, with a great dual-camera setup, speedy performance, useful software features and S Pen, and IP68 waterproofing. But there are no distinguishing features that get us excited about it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Phone review

Editor's note : The Galaxy Note 8 is now on sale in select markets, including the US.

The Galaxy Note 8 tops Samsung's already excellent S8 and S8 Plus with dual cameras and a boatload of stylus tricks. It's the most feature-rich Android phone you can buy.

An expensive phone, the Note 8 has more features than most people will need. Samsung's portrait mode can be finicky. The poorly placed fingerprint reader repeats the Galaxy S8's worst design flaw.

The Galaxy Note 8 retakes the throne as the ultimate Android phone for now, but some intense competition is just over the horizon.

Galaxy Note8: Features, specs and everything else you need to know

The follow-up to Samsung's ill-fated Note 7, the Galaxy Note 8 is the pinnacle of Samsung's phone design.

Not yet. The Note 8 ships with the Samsung Experience based on Android Nougat 7.1.1. However, Google has said it is working with Samsung to get some of its handsets updated to Oreo before the end of the year.

Galaxy Note 8 review: Don't call it a comeback, call it the phone of the year

Samsung is back with the Note 8, a full redesign of last year's doomed handset that brings a gorgeous screen, awesome camera, and a few tricks up its sleeve.

Bright, brilliant 6.3-inch screen is a stunner in any light. ; Dual camera is a big step up from the S8 and Live Focus is a winner. ; The S Pen is better than ever and truly complements the Note's screen. ; Battery life in excellent despite a decrease...

Bixby button and fingerprint sensor are a nuisance. ; It might be a bit too big and heavy for some users.

The very existence of a stylus on the Note 8 is enough to set it apart from nearly every other smartphone, but the S Pen isn’t just for comfort and precision. It gives the Note a level of productivity that just isn’t available on other handsets. Aside...

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Representing the current pinnacle of smartphone technology, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phone has everything that's great about the Galaxy S8, plus dual cameras and an S Pen stylus.

High-quality, waterproof build. Improved S Pen stylus. Dual cameras. Modem supports emerging networks.

Expensive. Too big to work with current Gear VR headset.

The Note 8 is the pinnacle of smartphone technology right now. There is no better processor, no better screen, no better sound quality, no better reception, and no better camera. It costs a lot of money, but you're getting what you pay for.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review: one for the fans

The new Note is the best Note ever

Lovely display ; Fast performance ; Reliable battery life ; Excellent standard camera

It’s enormous ; It’s expensive ; Secondary camera is far inferior to main camera ; Terrible fingerprint scanner placement

The Note used to be the best and only truly great big phone. Now it has company.

Review: Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Get ready to enjoy 6.3 inches of pure beauty.

The Note 8 has every feature a great smartphone should, and then some. This is the biggest, bestest screen. The two cameras take fantastic pictures.

That big screen massacres your battery. Live Focus can be screwy. Samsung still loves overwrought software tweaks.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 review

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is an 8-inch tablet that costs $399. In a world where the 7-inch Nexus 7 exists for $200 and even the 7.9-inch iPad Mini starts at $330 or lower, $399 is a tough sell. If you're looking for a simple small tablet, the Nexus 7...

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is comfortable to hold and has the best-looking small tablet screen yet. Writing with the S Pen feels natural and is preferred over typing on a tablet screen. Storage can be expanded via microSD, and the Watch On feature has...

The $399 price is a lot for a small tablet, no matter its features. It's not as thin or as light as the iPad Mini, and some people won't appreciate the highly saturated look of the OS. Also, its face buttons sometimes get in the way and there are...

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a stunning tablet with a truly useful stylus, but it's not worth $400 unless you're an artist or prefer pen input.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Review

For the past couple of years Samsung, and many other Google partners, have been on the hunt to improve productivity on Android - particularly on tablets. We've seen hardware solutions (ASUS' Transformer line) as well as software solutions (Samsung's...

What could turn the Note 8.0 from a solid niche contender to a formidable competitor is rather simple. With a higher resolution display (and accompanying tweaks to make TouchWiz a little more subtle in its screen presence) and a faster SoC, the Note...
