Sony Xperia 5 hands-on review: Compact, colorful, but not quite a winner

Is Sony's Xperia 5 a true successor to the much-loved and now mostly deceased Compact series of Sony phones that packed winning specs into a smaller, more easy to handle body? Almost. It certainly wins on the design, style, colors, and size; but there...

Sony Xperia 5 review: the smaller, taller phone

The phone does everything well, but nothing best — and for $800, that's sort of a problem.

Decent camera ; Good battery life ; Big screen in an easy-to-hold body

Sony software still needs work ; No wireless charging ; Fingerprint sensor is hit or miss

At the end of the day, I don’t have any reasons to really dislike the Sony Xperia 5. I don’t have any really essential reasons to recommend it, either.

Sony Xperia 5 Review: the best camera to fit in your pocket?

The Sony Xperia 5 is the spiritual successor to the Xperia Z Compact series — a series that packed all of the top-tier hardware from the brand's flagship phone but in a smaller body. And while small phones are not exactly what the general public wants,...

A compact-ish top-tier phone; Great cameras; Beautiful, distinct design; The display can look great if you tinker with it; Snappy performance, clean software

The fingerprint scanner is abysmal; Camera app needs extra work; Stereo speakers are tinny and underwhelming; We suffered some crashes and software instabilities (v. 55.0.A.7.115)

Sony Xperia 5, hands on: A compact, wide-screen flagship-class handset Review | ZDNet

Like its larger Xperia 1 stablemate, the 6.1-inch Xperia 5 has a 21:9 OLED screen. As well as being more affordable, the Xperia 5 is more usable for those who struggle with large-screen phones.

Sony Xperia 5: Bringing Hollywood to the Smartphone?

Sony's Xperia 5 promises to push new boundaries in video, borrowing features from their mirrorless camera range and motion picture products.

Fantastic features for filmmakers ; Very well balanced cameras ; Strong battery given its size

Lack of image stabilisation

Sony Xperia 5 review

The Sony Xperia 5 is an elegantly designed, reasonably priced flagship phone, but quirky ergonomics, frustrating cameras and a lacking feature set makes it a poor alternative to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S20 and iPhone 11.

That's not to say the Sony Xperia 5 doesn't have its advantages: You can find it for as low as $699 from some retailers, its industrial design is really tasteful in that classically Sony way, and it's a good unlocked option to bring to the carrier of...

Sony Xperia 5 review: The not-so-compact, ‘compact’ phone [Video]

Finding a flagship phone in compact form is something that has become increasingly difficult as OEMs steadily move to building more oversized devices. However, Sony has persisted with their now-defunct “Compact” series, and more recently the Xperia 5....

Sony Xperia 5 review: Not so Compact

Essentially a shrunken version of the Xperia 1, this spiritual successor to the Xperia Compact line struggles to reconcile Sony's newfound obsession with tall phones and the smaller form factor. There are some bright spots with the display quality and...

Top-tier performance ; Stylish hardware ; Bright, vibrant display ; Decent battery life ; Comprehensive audio suite

Too tall ; Disappointing cameras ; No headphone jack ; 21:9 isn't catching on ; Dull software
