Canon EOS Rebel T5 review

For what it is and whom it's intended for, Canon's EOS Rebel T5 is a decent budget DSLR. Yet, it leaves us wanting more.

For what it is and whom it’s intended for, the T5 is a decent camera. We wouldn’t go out of our way to recommend it, especially since there are less expensive options available like the recently reviewed, lighter weight . Sure, it doesn’t have a...

The phone in your pocket is OK for quick snapshots. But for challenging subjects or lighting, you need an actual camera. These five entry-level DSLRs make the upgrade easy.

Relatively low cost ; Great image quality

Live View focus seems sluggish ; Physical controls can be awkward to navigate

Canon EOS Rebel T5 with 18-55mm Lens

It's a perfectly OK entry-level dSLR, but the T3i (which you can find for $500, £425 , or AU$549) delivers the same photo and video quality, has identical or better performance, and has superior features, including a higher-resolution flip-and-twist...

While it doesn't stand out particularly, the Canon EOS Rebel T5 does produce nice photos typical of its price class, its performance isn't bad, and it has a comfortable design.

The feature set is limited, even by entry-level standards.

While it's a perfectly fine camera when you're making the jump from a point-and-shoot, there are better choices than the Canon EOS Rebel T5.

Canon EOS Rebel T5

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 sports an attractive price tag, but you can get a better entry-level SLR for a little bit more money.

Includes optically stabilized lens. Raw shooting support. Detailed images at high ISOs. 1080p video capture. On-screen shooting guide.

Fixed LCD. Pentamirror viewfinder. Slower autofocus. Burst shooting limited to 3fps. Small buffer when shooting Raw. No microphone input.

The T5 is a no-frills camera, so don't look for integrated Wi-Fi or GPS. Those features haven't made a lot of headway into SLRs, but the Nikon D5300 does have both. Canon's least expensive model with Wi-Fi is the midrange EOS 70D. If you opt for the T5...

Canon's new entry-level dSLR should get the job done

The new dSLR doesn't break any new ground, but has just enough controls to get you started.
