Canon PowerShot SD890 IS

The PowerShot SD890 IS's quirky design is offset by a wealth of features and impressive images.

Vivid color in night shots. Excellent video quality. Can start up in review mode and preview scene modes on LCD. Impressive battery life.

Pricey. Awkward Power button. Scroll wheel takes some getting used to.

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS review: Canon PowerShot SD890 IS

Whether human or camera, it's always hard following in the footsteps of a popular sibling, and the near-universally well-liked Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is a harder act to follow than most. Rather than simply bump up the resolution and zoom range for...

Optical image stabilization; optical viewfinder; decent photos.

Poor shot-to-shot performance; small LCD; awkward design; no optical zoom in movie capture.

A solid compact snapshooter, the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS nevertheless disappoints when compared with its predecessors and line-mates.

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS

If you're looking for a slim design point and shoot camera with a fairly decent zoom range, the SD890 IS definitely deserves a look. It offers one of the longest zooms for a camera in its class, although it sacrifices a bit on the wide angle end. ...

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH Review

If you're still confused about Canon's ELPH lineup after both of those then, well, I don't know what to tell you

Very good photo quality (in good light) ; 5X optical zoom in a compact, stylish body ; Optical image stabilization ; Generally snappy performance ; Optical viewfinder, a rarity in this class (even though its tiny) ; Redeye not a problem thanks to...

Images are on the noisy side in low light ; Some corner blurring ; LCD very difficult to see when wearing polarized sunglasses ; Lens is on the slow side (in terms of aperture) ; Sluggish flash recharging ; Difficult to access power button ; More...

Canon is one of the few camera manufacturers who still puts a memory card in the box along with the camera. In the case of the SD890, you'll get a 32MB card, which holds just six photos at the highest quality setting. Thus, you'll want to buy a larger...

Despite these setbacks, the SD890 does offer a great value in and of itself, if not in comparison to all of its predecessors. The developments in this latest model combine to offer a unique device which blows away its competition in many regards but...

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Review

Following up on a classic is inherently risky business: the list of new releases in the digicam world that have ultimately been cursed by the "but the last model was so good" argument is long and invariably grows every year. Ultimately, as gets said...

AF performance remains a highlight, Clean, vibrant shots, even at higher ISOs, Almost too easy to use, New styling and interface (if you like it)

Flash recycle/shot-to-shot times not improved, Initial price is predictably steep, Lens and white balance could be better, New styling and interface (if you hate it)

Canon IXUS 970IS

5x optical zoom and 10 megapixels in a stylish package

5x optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilisation, sharp images, good noise performance up to ISO 800, looks fantastic

Some chromatic aberration issues, power button poorly designed

With few flaws a lot to like, the IXUS 970IS is another great compact camera from Canon. Its most noteworthy feature is the stabilised 5x optical zoom, but there should be something for most users in this package.
