Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 review

Intro Editors' note: We have changed the rating for this product to reflect changes in the current market since this review was written.

Reasonably fast, high-grade megazoom lens; excellent viewfinder; pleasing photo quality; exceptional video-recording capabilities; decent price for its class.

Doesn't save raw or TIFF files; considerable image noise at ISO 400; occasionally underexposes flash shots.

A responsive megazoom camera with impressive video-recording capabilities and pleasing output, the Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 makes an excellent travel companion for shooters who don't require a semipro feature set.

Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 Review

Announced in February 2004 at the PMA exhibition in Las Vegas, the Dimage Z2 is a direct replacement for the popular Z1, and retains that camera's 'interesting' looks and basic features, adding an all-new APO GT lens, upping the pixel count from 3 to 4...

Good result in the resolution test Excellent handling and operation Very fast and responsive in use Very fast focus - and generally very accurate too Generally good color, good white balance in daylight (though see cons, below) Excellent range of...

Images look a bit soft, need sharpening in post-processing Images can be over-contrasty - losing highlight/shadow detail in bright conditions Occasional mild color casts Occasional overexposure (and more rarely, underexposure) Visible noise at high...

Fast, fun, and easy to use, the Konica Minolta Z2 offers a compelling combination of features (including some pretty meaty movie capabilities) and image quality at an excellent price. The camera's 'hit rate' is very high, with the only problems being...

Konica Minolta DiMage Z2

The Konica Minolta DiMage Z2 has a unique look and is easy to shoot.

Konica Minolta claims its Rapid AF will focus in as little as 0.2 seconds, but we did not find the camera any speedier than its competitors in shooting. Our tests showed the Z2 to have quick boot (4.4 seconds) and recycle (2.2 seconds) times—in both...

Konica Minolta DiMage Z2

You get lots of features for your money with this $450 model.

The Z2 delivers a wealth of features for a $449 camera and turns out fairly nice photos. With a little practice, you should be able to get better images using its manual modes.

Digital Cameras - Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

The original DiMAGE Z1 was clearly one of the best long-zoom digicam bargains on the market, a fact that no doubt contributed to its being one of the most popular cameras on the entire IR site last year. The Z2 carries on in that tradition, adding a...

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2

There are a ton of ultra zoom cameras out there, some of which are very good. How does the Z2 compare? Find out in our review

Full manual controls ; Hot shoe (though limited to Minolta flashes) ; Supports wide-angle conversion lens ; Fabulous movie mode: 800 x 600 and 640 x 480 ; High quality (but small) LCD ; LCD still usable in low light situations ; Good redeye test...

Above average purple fringing; images seem fuzzy/noisy at times ; Low light focusing wasn't great; no AF-assist lamp ; Lens rattles, plastic body feels a bit cheap ; Continued concerns about durability of switch finder ; Camera bundle not great

As I said at the start of the section, the Z2 isn't my favorite ultra zoom camera, but it's good enough to get my recommendation.
