Leica Vario-Elmar-T 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6

The Leica Vario-Elmar-T 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6 captures excellent images and is quite compact, but it's too expensive for what it is.

Compact. Sharp through zoom range. Minimal distortion. Great build quality

Expensive. Lacks optical stabilization. Edges a little soft at widest angle. Some color fringing when shooting JPG

The Leica Vario-Elmar-T 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6 ($1,750) is one of a pair of lenses that launched with the T (Typ 701) mirrorless camera. It's not Leica's first attempt at an autofocusing zoom with this range—the X Vario uses a similar zoom lens—but it's the...

Leica X Vario (Typ 107)

The Leica X Vario (Typ 107) camera marries a zoom lens to a big APS-C image sensor, but its slow lens and high price make it a tough sell.

APS-C image sensor. 5fps burst shooting. Includes leather strap. Supports accessory EVF. Stellar build quality. Sharp rear LCD. Snappy autofocus in good light. Excellent manual focus experience. Detailed JPG output through ISO 6400. Includes Adobe...

Very expensive. Big lens offsets compact body design. Modest light-gathering capability. No optical image stabilization. Edges and corners are not tack sharp. Some rolling shutter motion artifacts in video. No mic input.

The menus are text based and utterly straightforward. Navigation is responsive; there's no delay between tapping buttons and seeing the results on the 3-inch rear display. That LCD is excellent; I had no problems seeing the live view feed when shooting...

Leica Vario X first to use a zoom lens on an APS-C compact

The expensive Vario X camera does have a zoom lens, but it's a surprisingly slow lens.

Leica X Vario Review

The Leica X Vario is a 16 megapixel prosumer compact camera with an image-stabilized 28-70mm (eq.) f/3.5-6.4 zoom lens. The X Vario has an APS-C sized 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor with a 3:2 aspect ratio which promises to deliver similar image quality to...

OK, we're a little late to the party with our review of the Leica X Vario, so how does it stack up nearly a year after its release now that the likes of the exciting Fujifilm X-T1, Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Sony A7 cameras have also entered the market?

Leica X Vario Review

The Leica X Vario proved to be more than just an X2 with a fixed-lens zoom, and certainly adds up to more than the sum of its parts. The camera's body design and controls drip with precision engineering, making it a complete joy to hold and shoot....

Outstanding design and build; Exceptionally sharp 28-70mm equivalent zoom lens; Very good still image quality with accurate and realistic colors; Fairly speedy and accurate autofocusing

Expensive, especially for a fixed-lens compact; Relatively slow f/3.5-6.4 lens; Below average video functionality and quality; Not at all pocketable, about as big and heavy as a mirrorless camera with a moderate zoom lens attached

This may not have been the Leica you were looking for. However, the Leica X Vario still pleasantly surprised us, especially after all the naysayers panned the camera for what it wasn't, even before they got their hands on one! So what is the X Vario...

Leica D Vario-Elmar 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 Asph. OIS - Review / Test Report

So is the Leica 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS you'd take that that lonely tropical island (if you could take just one) ? Yep, it could be the one although it's not totally flawless but then no lens is. However, it is both sharp and contrasty throughout the...
