Nikon 1 J1 review (video)

Nikon's first mirrorless camera has a stylish design, but performance misses the mark for pro and other advanced users.

Nikon 1 J1

In August 2012, Nikon released firmware version 1.20 for the V1 and J1 which among other small changes, claims to improve the cameras' program lines in some exposure modes, to reduce the risk of blurred images due to slow shutter speeds. We have not...

Good image quality (comparable to 12MP Micro Four Thirds sensor output) ; Very good, print-ready JPEGs - nice color reproduction, and a good balance of NR/detail ; Fast and accurate phase-detection tracking AF as part of adaptive 'Hybrid' AF system ;...

Conservative Auto ISO behavior can result in dangerously slow shutter speeds indoors (especially frustrating for social photography and continuous-advance shots of indoor sports) ; No 'live' simulation of exposure compensation, nor on-screen histogram...

The J1 will reward point-and-shoot upgraders with a noticeable bump in image quality, but often fails to deliver acceptable results in lower-light settings when operated in its fully automated mode.

Nikon 1 J1 review

Small-bodied interchangeable-lens cameras are the future of photography, and everyone knows it. At their best, they bring DSLR-like control and quality to cameras with much smaller bodies. That's...

Good-looking ; Very fast focusing and shooting ; Multiple available lenses

Sensor is more point-and-shoot than DSLR ; Way too expensive ; Terrible low-light image quality

The Nikon J1 is a barely-disguised point-and-shoot with a bunch of lenses and a $650 price tag

Nikon J1

Nikon's first compact interchangeable lens camera, the J1, is capable of capturing sharp images at incredible speeds in a body that's much smaller than a D-SLR. Its autofocus is extremely quick and accurate, and the included lens delivers consistently...

Compact size. Fast, accurate autofocus. Good low-light performance. Built-in flash. Silent operation.

Pricey. Fixed LCD. No accessory port. Slow-motion video is not high-def. Limited lens selection.

The other exclusive to the Nikon 1 system is the Smart Photo Selector. This mode captures 60 images in a second, and selects five to keep. Its algorithm operates in two stages, first throwing out images that are blurry, out of focus, and poorly...

Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm lens review

Nikon took its time introducing its interchangeable-lens camera system, dubbed the Nikon 1 series, and though I don't agree with a lot of the choices the company made, it clearly put a lot of thought into the cameras before rushing out me-too versions...

The Nikon 1 J1 delivers excellent video and low-ISO photo quality, plus some aspects of the camera's performance lead its class.

The CX lens system drops manual focus rings on the lenses; you can't use flash above 1/60 sec; and there's no option for an EVF.

The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera, but there's nothing here that screams out "buy it" over similar competitors. It's also on the expensive side for a point-and-shoot upgrader, but has drawbacks for the more advanced user.

Nikon's J1 is a stylish and easy to use EVIL camera. It boasts apowerful 10-metapixel CX-format CMOS image sensor, good shootingperformance, and a plethora of exposure options. Like all cameras the J1 has its downfalls (battery life for example),...

Stylish exterior that's available in five colors combinations (lenses match the body) ; Captures pleasing images both indoors and out ; Records high-quality HD video ; Extremely easy to use with Scene Auto selector and Smart Photo selector ; Plenty of...

Mode dial is limited, forcing you to use the menu to change between the advanced exposure options ; Weak built-in flash ; No hot shoe ; Visible noise even at lower ISO settings ; Poor battery life compared to competition ; We did not see 5fps in burst...

What follows is a quick overview of the video capabilities of the Nikon J1. Read our comprehensive analysis and testing results in greater detail at DigitalCameraInfo.com.

Other than its bad showing in our low light sensitivity test, the Nikon J1 showed us an impressive video performance for a compact interchangeable lens camera. Best of all, the J1 is loaded with manual controls in video mode, and those controls can...

The Nikon J1's new sensor size was controversial even before it was announced, with most wondering why the company would produce a smaller sensor compact when the race is more toward greater quality at higher ISO. It's no secret that Micro Four Thirds...
