A camera that can keep up with the kids

The Nikon D5200 improves performance over its predecessor, making it a great general-purpose dSLR.

With excellent photo and video quality for its class, a fluid shooting design and solid feature set, the ; delivers a lot for the money.

Though it has no significant flaws, the lack of an autofocus motor in the body limits your lens-selection flexibility.

The Nikon D5200 makes a great choice for family and vacation photographers.

Nikon D5200

As Nikon's 'advanced beginner' DSLR, the D5200 sits between the entry-level D3200 and the enthusiast-targeted D7100 in the company's most recent APS-C lineup. The D5200 offers 24MP resolution (like its APS-C stablemates), an articulated rear LCD and...

Excellent low ISO performance in both JPEG and Raw files ; Class-leading noise performance at high ISO sensitivities ; Very good default JPEG settings ; Articulated rear screen ; Effective auto white balance in a variety of lighting conditions ; Auto...

Slow AF in live view and video modes (compared to mirrorless APS-C cameras) ; No real-time aperture adjustment in live view ; Relatively small image buffer limits burst capacity in Raw-enabled modes ; Soft video output at default settings ; No aperture...

The Nikon D5200 is a solid performer that delivers excellent image quality and impressive high ISO performance along with an articulated screen and a control interface appropriate for users stepping up to a DSLR.

Nikon D5200

The under-$1,000 Nikon D5200 is a capable D-SLR that delivers impressive image quality and continuous shooting at 4 frames per second, earning it our Editors' Choice.

Excellent image quality. Fast autofocus. 4fps continuous shooting. Sharp vari-angle LCD. 39-point autofocus system. Fast to start and shoot. 1080i60 video capture. Wi-Fi and GPS add-ons available.

Small pentamirror viewfinder. Will not autofocus with screw-drive lenses. Noisy focus during video recording. Only one control wheel.

You won't find a lot of bells and whistles on the D5200. There's no GPS like there is on the Sony Alpha 65, nor do you get built-in Wi-Fi. Nikon does sell accessories to add these functions, though. The tiny $60 WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter plugs into...

Nikon D5200 review

The Nikon D5100 is a solid camera with excellent photo and video quality, but relatively sluggish performance tarnishes its allure for me. Nikon fixes that in the D5200 with the same new autofocus and metering systems that debuted in the D600 , plus an...

Nikon D5200 ( with 18-55mm lens, Red)

Image quality As with the D5100, still and motion image quality remains excellent; but despite a new sensor and updated image-processing engine, it's not noticeably better. The camera does a great job optimizing its JPEGs -- while raw still gives you...

Nikon D5200 dSLR Review

The D5200 is a powerful entry-level DSLR that's well tailored for the beginner, but won't sell more serious photographers short. High image quality, fast auto focus, and a swiveling TFT LCD are arguably the most attractive features - in particular the...

Only one control/thumb wheel ; Burst modes could be faster ; Built-in flash is weak ; Wi-Fi and GPS not included (but optional) ; Viewfinder could be bigger

Nikon D5200 Review

The Nikon D5200 is a new 24.1megapixel DSLR camera that can record Full 1080p HD movies at 1920x1280 pixels / 25fps or 50i/60i with stereo sound. A high-resolution 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor makes it easier to compose your shots from difficult...

The new Nikon D5200 is a solid upgrade of the previous D5100 model, with better auto-focus and metering systems, enhanced video options, slightly faster burst shooting, friendlier user interface and more resolution, although that all comes at a slight...

Nikon D5200 Review

With its easy-to-use, consumer-friendly design and relatively affordable price, the Nikon D5200 may technically be geared for beginners, but it also carries a considerable amount of photographic power within its compact, ergonomic body. The DSLR's...

Captures sharp, detailed photos with its new 24.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, even at higher ISOs; Features a familiar (D5100) but refined body design; Records Full HD video with full-time autofocus tracking; Packs a ton of advanced features into a...

Autofocuses a little slowly for its class and struggles at times in low light; Changing some basic settings takes more time and effort than it should; Mediocre kit lens

The Nikon D5200 is a lot of camera for the money, and though it's aimed at advanced beginners in terms of image quality and capabilities, it's not too far removed from DSLRs geared for more serious photographers. Thanks to its 24.1-megapixel CMOS...

Nikon D5200 Review

Conclusion Nikon's D5200 sits in the middle of the most current triumvirate of Nikon cropped sensor DSLRs -- the D3200, 5200 and 7100. Its MSRP is $100 more than the D3200 but it offers an articulating 3 inch monitor, an extra frame per second in its...
