Olympus FE-170 review

On paper, the Olympus FE-170 is almost identical to its brother, the FE-180 . Both have the same 6-megapixel sensor, the same 38mm-to-114mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, and the same emphasis on simplified, automated photography. In actual use, however,...

Simple to use; inexpensive.

Terrible performance.

The Olympus FE 170's price is hard to beat; its performance, not so much.

What do Olympus' 6-megapixel "Easy & Fun" compacts offer and which is the best?

Let's say you want to spend under US$200 for a new digital camera and have always liked Olympus. You're in luck because this past summer the company announced four new FE-Series point-and-shoot digital cameras. They are all in Olympus' "Easy & Fun"...

Very low price for a good 6.0 megapixel camera, Higher-res screen than its pricier siblings, Uses standard AA batteries, Jack for optional A/C adapter, Comes with rechargeable AAs and charger, Has 640 x 480 movies with sound and zoom, TruePic TURBO...

No audio, Doesn't come with rechargeable batteries or charger, 320 x 240 video without sound or zoom, Lack of TruePic TURBO processor visible in lesser picture quality, Limited ISO range (400 max), Only 10MB onboard meemory, No audio clips or voice...

Olympus FE-170

Olympus introduces the FE-170 camera with 3x zoom that proves that photography is fun. With a no-nonsense "one button, one function" design and a 6.0 million pixel CCD, the Olympus FE-170 makes taking - and printing - even larger size photos a cinch....

Olympus FE-170

Olympus' starter-level camera has the essential features but messes up where it matters.

Olympus FE-170

With a small price tag and few features, the FE-170 is Olympus's low-end point-and-shoot.

Consumers willing to spend a little more might want to consider the higher-end Olympus FE cameras instead, whose slightly higher price tags net additional features such as slimmer bodies, stronger lenses, and microphones for shooting movies with audio.

Olympus FE-170

It may not look like much, but this keenly priced camera from Olympus will deliver much better images than current camera phones - and all you have to do is point and shoot

Some of the sharpest and most naturalistic coloured images seen from a pocket snapshot camera at this price

Boring, boxy design, plastic feel, no removable media included (so budget extra for a card)

Olympus FE-170

Another entry level digital camera from Olympus. In terms of design the FE-170 has a touch more style than other cameras in this series. Ease of use is a big attraction.

Ease of use ; Low price

Shutter lag ; Indoors in lowlight

"The Olympus FE-170 is an inexpensive digital camera. Not surprisingly it has its limitations, but if you are prepared to accept these you will find the camera is priced about right. It also scores highly as easy to use."
