Olympus PEN E-P5 Review

The Olympus PEN E-P5 jams the latest camera technologies into a solidly built, elegant retro body.

All the staffers who had a chance to try out the E-P5 loved it, and we were sad to see it leave our hands. It’s nicely designed, has a ton of features, and produces really nice images. The noise filter is a bit aggressive that results in...

Olympus PEN E-P5

When Olympus introduced the original Micro Four Thirds PEN E-P1 almost 4 years ago in June 2009, it was the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to adopt a compact, 'rangefinder-style' body that made no pretence to look like an SLR. It also saw...

Beautifully-styled and built, with lots of external controls ; Excellent JPEG output: warm, saturated colours without being excessive ; Classic twin-dial user interface ; Useful and easy to use Wi-Fi ; Reliable metering and white balance ; Extremely...

Unusually prone to blurred/shaken images at certain shutter speeds (around 1/160sec) ; Movie quality rather disappointing ; Camera configuration dauntingly complex ; Lenses with snap manual focus ring don't engage manual focus assist tools ;...

The E-P5 is the most substantial re-working of the original PEN model, and it's the most impressive yet. It produces the same excellent image quality as the E-M5 and has a proper two-dial control system. This, combined with a better touch screen and...

Hipper Snapper

Like a lot of other cameras Olympus is churning out these days, the E-P5 looks straight out of the '60s. Of course, that's all a retro-facade. Despite its nostalgia-tinged design, this Micro Four-Thirds shooter is the newest and fastest addition to...

Olympus PEN E-P5 ( Body Only, black)

You can buy the camera either as body-only or as a kit that includes the 17mm f1.8 lens plus add-on electronic viewfinder. The latter configuration is expensive, but I'm quite partial to the EVF. It's humongous, but it's a lot more stable to shoot that...

The Olympus PEN E-P5 renders extremely good photos for its class, and has a streamlined shooting design. Plus, it's fast.

The navigation button/dial is annoyingly awkward, and I wish the flash tilted.

An excellent entry in the Micro Four Thirds universe, the Olympus PEN E-P5 should please a lot of folks, but it's also expensive given that it doesn't deliver best-in-class photo quality.

Olympus PEN E-P5 review

Normally a two-year product cycle isn't that much for a camera targeted at advanced photographers. But in a field where technology mutates as quickly as it does for advanced interchangeable-lens cameras, that's a long time. So at two years since the...

Olympus PEN E-P5

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is an extremely impressive mirrorless camera, but we prefer its sibling, the Olympus OM-D EM-5.

Compact. In-body stabilization. Fast autofocus. Shoots at 9.7 frames per second. Large native lens library. Articulating rear LCD. Touch input support. Built-in flash. Hot shoe and accessory port. Easy Wi-Fi setup. 1080p video recording. 1/8,000...

Stabilization system is audible. EVF is not built-in. Lacks a standard mic input. Focus peaking and magnification could be better implemented. Wi-Fi could use more features.

Everything about the Wi-Fi works; it's just unfortunate that it doesn't do more. There's no way to connect the E-P5 to a home network or hotspot. So if you're having a party and want to post a few photos to Facebook, you have to first transfer them to...

Olympus E-P5 Review

The brand new E-P5 is the latest Micro Four Thirds camera for keen enthusiasts from Olympus. The Olympus EP5 offers a 16-megapixel “Live MOS” sensor, tiltable 1.04-million-dot touchscreen, a pop-up flash and external flash hot-shoe, built-in Wi-Fi,...

The Olympus E-P5 is a compelling mix of old and new, fusing together a gorgeous retro design with the latest 21st-century technology to create the most stylish and advanced PEN yet. It's not perfect though - fitting the expensive VF-4 viewfinder makes...

Olympus E-P5 Review

The Olympus E-P5 takes the best of its predecessor, the E-P3, and many features from the acclaimed OM-D E-M5, and adds a few new wrinkles of its own to make it the company's best PEN-series Micro Four Thirds camera yet. Key new features include 5-axis...

Handsome retro styling; Very good image quality and dynamic range, with competitive high ISO performance; Lightning fast autofocusing; Excellent burst speeds (nearly 10fps at full res); Top shutter speed of 1/8000 second; Sharp, bright 17mm f/1.8 kit...

Heavier than some mirrorless models; Weak flash; Below average battery life; No built-in viewfinder (but EVF available in a kit or for separate purchase); A bit pricey compared to the similar E-M5, which offers a built-in EVF and weather sealing at...

Don't let the PEN moniker fool you. The Olympus E-P5 not only outshines its PEN predecessor, the E-P3, but also in many ways outpaces its older, acclaimed cousin, the OM-D E-M5. Though the E-P5 and E-M5 boast a lot of the same advanced photographic...
