Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5

The FZ5 has some interesting features, but its performance and image quality didn't really impress us.

Long zoom lens. Good color fidelity. Versatile burst mode. Geared toward different skill levels. Decent battery life.

Image quality is just average. Image stabilization doesn't improve images or work well in low light. Electronic viewfinder is very grainy.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 Review

Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the DMC-FZ5 is one of two direct sucessors to the popular (and dpreview Highly Recommended) DMC-FZ3. Like its predecessor the FZ5 sports a Leica-branded DC Vario-Elmarit zoom with a whopping 12x optical range...

Excellent resolution and detail capture - a real improvement on its predecessor Very sharp results (though see below) Good, natural color Superb 12x optical zoom Effective image stabilization Small and light, but well built Comprehensive range of...

Some vignetting and corner softness in macro mode Images slightly over-sharpened Manual exposure setting still a bit awkward No options for converter lenses No manual focus Focus at extreme telephoto sometimes hunts, sometimes misses More noise at ISO...

The DMC-FZ5 solves the only two reservations most people had about its predecessor (the DMC-FZ3); fairly low pixel count and slightly sluggish focus (especially at the long end of the zoom). It also adds a bigger, better screen, slightly better...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 is a 5-megapixel digital camera with a high-quality Leica 12x optical zoom. The Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 12x zoom is equivalent to a 36 - 432mm zoom on a 35mm camera with a F2.8 to F3.3 maximum aperture. Panasonic's advanced MEGA

Bottom line - The Lumix DMC-FZ5 will make an great choice for the family or tourist user, especially if you're shooting your children's sporting events. With its 12x optical zoom lens, you'll be able to fill the frame with distant subjects, and with its 3

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

Panasonic is a company that started a little slow in the digital camera market, but have really come on strong in the last year or two. The five megapixel Panasonic FZ5 is largely based on the three megapixel FZ3 model we reviewed in 2004, which at the...

Long 12x optical zoom lens, Good corner sharpness at wide angle (but only average at telephoto), Optical image stabilization really helps make use of the long zoom, Fast shutter response, Excellent shot to shot speeds, Excellent macro capability...

At maximum telephoto, corner sharpness decreases from very good to average, LCD/EVF doesn't "gain up" under low light conditions, hard to aim the camera at the lowest light levels it can shoot at, Exposures longer than 1/4 second require use of more...

Superzoom Digital Cameras With Image Stabilizer; Are These A Viable Alternative To A Digital SLR System

All electronic viewfinders blackout for a short time between frames when shooting a series of images, making it difficult to keep moving subjects properly framed.

Even after a few lattes, your images will be focused

12x image stabilized optical zoom, flexible feature set for experienced users and snapshooters, good performance and image quality, bundled lens adapter and lens hood.

Small control buttons, built-in flash vignettes lens causes shadows when shooting at a downward angle, below average movie quality.

High capacity, high speed SD card

Some of the best cameras in 2004 werePanasonic's ultra zoom cameras. Now, for 2005 theyare two new models -- the Lumix DMC-FZ4 and DMC-FZ5-- which replace the DMC-FZ3 as the entry-level modelin the group.

Very good photo quality (though see issues below), 12X optical zoom lens (though a little slower than on the FZ3), Optical image stabilization system, Robust performance, especially with a high speed SD card; new focus modes are awesome, Nearly zero...

Images a little too sharp, leading to "jaggies", Above average redeye, LCD and EVF don't "gain up" in low light, Can't remove memory card while camera is on tripod, A VGA movie mode and manual focus would've been nice, Slowest shutter speed in program...
