If shooting HD video is a priority, the beginner-friendly GH1 is a great option. But it's pricey, and it's not quite a DSLR.

Toughened cameras are great at letting you shoot almost anywhere, but you’ll often pay handsomely for the privilege and still end up with average image quality and a restrictive optical zoom range.

Actually works under water like advertised, just have to remember to "rinse" it off after a day at the beach, salt water will cloud the internal lens if not rinsed in tap water. Takes very nice pics, though will not look it through the screen at first....

Though I don't use the camera much, I have yet to hear any complaints other than the battery dies within a month not in use.

It's waterproof, and durable.

This camera sucks underwater for video, and taking pictures. The camera constantly freezes up or takes a long time before actually taking the picture. The picture quality is actually really poor when pictures are zoomed in. I would not recommend this...

Easy to use camera that shines for underwater usage. We used a friends or snorkeling in the islands and liked it so much we purchased when on special. Still waiting to put this one through it's paces and check for leaks as others have said.

As with the rugged cameras the zoom is less than impressive compared to other point and shoot options, but that is not why you purchase this particular model...
