Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Camera

The lens on the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 looks bigger than the camera itself. Among cameras we've tested, this model's 12X optical zoom is the longest, with a 35mm-equivalent range of 36mm to 432mm. Despite the length, the lens protrudes only about 2.25...

Big 12x zoom lens Optical image stabilization

Low battery life

The DMC-FZ20 earned high marks for exposure quality in our lab tests, but it fared less well in resolution-dependent tests like those for sharpness and distortion; this was mainly because it was up against several models with 7-megapixel or higher...

Big 12x zoom lens ; Optical image stabilization

Low battery life

A huge, long lens with an optical image stabilizer, but it had disappointing battery life in our tests.

Panasonic Lumix FZ review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ4

12X zoom; effective image stabilization; manual controls; generally decent image quality; versatile burst modes.

Clumsy lens-hood design; low-res movie mode; coarse, small EVF.

An SLR alternative with a stabilized 12X zoom lens that both enthusiasts and casual photographers can appreciate.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20

With its impressive lens and other capabilities, there are few scenes it couldn't handle with aplomb.

Leica 12X optical zoom lens with constant f/2.8 aperture and image stabilization. Very comfortable, SLR-like feel. Powerful feature set. Lots of control over exposure.

Large and heavy for a superzoom. Poor video mode.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Review

Announced at the end of July 2004, the DMC-FZ20 is the flagship model of the third generation of 'super zoom' cameras from electronics giant Panasonic, and is a direct replacement for the FZ10. Like its predecessors (and the simultaneously announced...

Very high resolution and detail capture throughout the zoom range Sharp results Good, natural color Superb 12x optical zoom Very effective image stabilization Excellent handling - more compact than a DSLR but very stable Comprehensive range of controls...

Visible noise at ISOs above 100 Very occasional exposure problems Focus at extreme telephoto sometimes hunts, occasionally misses Low resolution movie mode Some red fringing at 12x/wide apertures (rarely seen in prints) Mode dial too easy to knock in...

Sitting at the top of Panasonic's deservedly popular super zoom range, the FZ20 gets as close to the handling, versatility and quality of a digital SLR as any compact yet; offering superb, responsive handling, masses of control, a stunning 12x F2.8...
