Pentax K-01 Review

Given the right circumstances, it grabs very nice stills. However, there are just too many negative issues.

We’ll give Pentax K-01 a passing grade — but just barely. Given the right circumstances, it grabs very nice stills. However, there are just too many negative issues. You have far better options at more palatable prices.

Pentax K-01 review

Pentax has a history of making cameras that are just a little bit offbeat. Just take a look at last year's Pentax Q: rather than making a more traditional mirrorless camera like many of its...

Excellent image quality ; Excellent battery life ; Huge lens ecosystem ; Manual controls and easy access to key settings

Expensive ; Relatively large and heavy ; Mediocre autofocus ; Bizarre physical design

Despite producing excellent photos, the K-01 lags behind the competition in some significant ways

Pentax K-01 Review

The Pentax K-01 (from $749) is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with a most unusual design. Created by Australian designer Marc Newson of (who, admittedly, I'd never heard of before the K-01), the modern look of the K-01 will certainly turn...

If you're with a bunch of photographers and want to get noticed, just pull out a Pentax K-01. Love it or hate it, the Marc Newson-designed camera has a one-of-a-kind style that'll certainly turn heads. The K-01 is about more than just looks, though -...

Review: Pentax K-01

The K-01 is the best-looking camera here. Thank industrial designer Marc Newson, who simplified the exterior and controls while preserving Pentax's K lens mount and...

Shoots video at three resolutions and 11 frame rates. Works with Pentax’s entire range of lenses

No dedicated viewfinder. What weight savings

Pentax K-01 review

Pentax K-01

The Pentax K-01's strengths lie in its use of existing standards; it's designed to use older K-mount lenses without an adapter, and uses Adobe DNG as its raw format. That, plus it has terrific photo quality.

It's relatively large, and even if you love the design aesthetic it has some irritating operational quirks. The autofocus isn't up to par.

It's a great option if you have a shelf full of K-mount lenses and don't mind missing some action shots, but the Pentax K-01 isn't such a great option for a typical amateur photographer.

Pentax K-01

Larger than its peers, but interestingly designed, the Pentax K-01 can capture sharp photos in all types of light and delivers full compatibility with every Pentax K-mount lens ever produced.

Extremely sharp lens. Excellent high ISO performance. Full compatibility with Pentax K-mount lenses. In-body image stabilization. Selectable video frame rates.

Larger than other cameras in its class. Slow autofocus. No EVF option. Fixed rear LCD.

The larger body paves the way for a solid layout of controls. There's a standard mode dial, control wheel, and shutter release up top, along with EV Compensation, programmable green and red buttons, and the flash release, which doubles as the Delete...

Pentax K-01 Review

High image quality ; 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor ; K-mount accepts numerous lenses ; ISO range of 100 to 25600 ; Focus Peaking mode ; Sensor-shift shake and dust reduction ; High-resolution 3-inch LCD (920,000 dots) ; Records 1080 HD video at 30 fps ;...

Burst modes are slow ; Autofocus can be sluggish ; No optical or eye-level electronic viewfinder ; Lack of hand grip can be awkward ; Button placement could be better ; Autofocus does not track during movie recording

The Pentax K-01 is a great opportunity for old-schoolers with a K-mount lens stash who are looking to go digital, or need an SLR backup. The high image quality is impressive, as is the ability to crank up the ISO to 25,600. The very high-resolution LCD...

Pentax K-01 Review

The Pentax K-01 is a new mirrorless compact system camera. Designed in collaboration with Marc Newson, the K-01 is based around a new 16.28-megapixel, APS-C sized CMOS image sensor and the Pentax K lens mount, as used in the company's long line of SLR...

The Pentax K-01 is a bravely different but ultimately flawed entry into the mirrorless compact system camera market. Love it or hate it looks aside, the main issue with the K-01 is its sheer size - it's not that much smaller than a regular DSLR and is...

Pentax K-01

Pentax goes its own way with a mirrorless camera that accepts standard K-mount lenses. That means access to a huge back catalog of quality optics without an adapter. Unfortunately, it also necessitates a body that's barely any smaller than a standard SLR.

Very good image quality and excellent high ISO performance. Premium build quality. In-body image stabilization. Lots of creative features. Full HD movie capture with manual exposure control

Barely any smaller than a standard SLR, but lacks viewfinder and phase-detect autofocus. Contrast-detect AF is slow and unreliable. Body design is clumsy and uncomfortable. Very slow raw burst shooting

With the Pentax K-01, the company treads new ground. It's a bold move, making Pentax the only manufacturer to offer two distinct mirrorless product lines, and the only one to offer a way to use existing SLR glass on mirrorless without an adapter. We...
