Pentax Optio 430 review: Pentax Optio 430

Pentax Optio 430

Ultracompact design; high resolution; easy to use; good value; some uncommon but useful features.

No uncompressed mode; auto-focus slow to react; doesn't support add-on flash or lens attachments.

A great value for the price, this camera is a good option for both novices and experienced shooters.

Pentax Optio 430 Review

The three megapixel Optio 330 was first announced back on 29th May 2001, later, in September Pentax announced the Optio 430, a four megapixel upgrade to the 330. The two cameras are essentially identical apart from the additional image size of the 430....

Good colour, good white balance presets Lens exhibited hardly any chromatic aberrations Live view histogram Ultra-compact size, light weight Fast performer, good startup, shot-to-shot and write times Metal body, solid feel, although average build...

Lens / CCD combination does not perform like a 4 megapixel Visible noise artifacts around detail beside smooth areas Noisy lens extension and zoom motor Produces 'overly contrasty' images Unsophisticated bayer interpolation / sharpening algorithms...

Digital Cameras - Pentax Optio 430 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Just as with the Optio 330 I tested before it, I liked the Optio 430 quite a bit. It's a very appealing package, with an excellent, rugged "feel" in the hand. Easy to use in full automatic mode, it also provides a surprising range of "enthusiast"...

Exposure can be manually or automatically controlled on the Optio 430, a nice feature for novices wanting to learn more about photography: The convenience of fully automatic exposure when you want it, or full manual control when you want to experiment....

Pentax Optio 430

Back in the "old days", Canon was the only game in town when it came to tiny digital cameras. Soon came Casio, and then Kyocera, and now Pentax. These micro-cameras are very popular, since they're easy to pocket, and can do about anywhere

Very small, good looking, easy to carry camera ; Many manual controls, unusual for a micro-camera ; Histograms and exposure info in record and playback mode ; Can use zoom in movie mode ; Good photo quality

Proprietary battery ; No sound in movie mode ; Focusing troubles in lower light ; Zoom and scroll", manual focus features could better ; Shutter speeds limited to 2 secs; Optio 330 could do 15 sec

The Pentax Optio 330 and 430 are the two best mini-camera out there, just edging out the Kyocera Finecam S3. For some people, I think the 330 is fine -- 4 Megapixels may be overkill. If you choose the 430, there are some tradeoffs: the shorter flash...
