Ricoh R10 Review

Announced just 7 months after its predecessor, the R8, the new Ricoh R10 is the latest addition to Ricoh's 7x zoom digital compact camera line-up. Offering the same versatile 28-200mm focal length as the R8, the most significant change to the R10 is a...

So why, you may well ask, has the Ricoh R10 still only earned our Recommended award, despite now scoring 5 in three areas? There's still one big problem with this camera which there's no getting away from - noisy images. We thought the R7 had finally...

Ricoh R10

A compact camera with a 7x zoom.

Well built and designed, easy to use, good for macro shots, has a regular mini-USB port, smooth zoom function

Body attracts a lot of dirt, noticeable purple fringing, no full manual mode

This is a point-and-shoot compact camera that's suitable for any type of photography. It also looks good, but its body does tend to get dirty. Its overall picture quality is good, but in some instances purple fringing will be noticeable in your shots.

Ricoh R10 review

It's only been eight months since the last R-series update so we wonder if it's been time well spent?

Good dynamic range ; Great macro feature ; Reliable flash

Not good at high ISO ; Some Image graining ; Poor face detection

While the R10 may offer Ricoh little to shout to the uninitiated public about, it's a very positive step towards a highly usable, reliable compact. No matter how likeable the camera is, though, when it comes to image quality it's still chasing its...

Ricoh R10 review

The Ricoh R10 also has a 28mm wideangle lens and, as with other Ricoh models, there's a good-sized grip area so you can confidently take steady shots one-handed. Optical image stabilisation and the ability to lock on to faces once it's recognised them...

The Ricoh R10 is, indeed, something of a photographer's camera. With the R10 you feel as though you're getting a 'proper' camera, with real buttons and over which you have real control over how each shot turns out.

Ricoh R10

Though the R10 has some smart, retro styling and a feature list as long as your arm, it falls down in the noise and performance stakes. Still, the camera's versatility gives you a headstart over its failings.

Loads of features ; Highly adjustable ; Retro styling

Noise issues ; Not very fast

Conclusion We like the Ricoh R10 a great deal, just as we liked its predecessors. Sadly, it hasn't made enough headway with the same issues — namely noise. On the bright side, the camera is so versatile and adjustable that diving into the menus will...
