Sony A6400 camera review: Definitely not a vlogger's dream camera

Sony's A6400 is a mixed bag. It's essentially a rebadged A6300 with the same sensor and thus the same image quality, but a new a flip-up screen. It's not as good a vlogging or video camera as we expected, because it lacks in-body stabilization and has...

Excellent eye- and face-tracking autofocus ; Fast burst shooting speeds ; Improved programmable buttons ; Sharp video

Bad rolling shutter ; No in-body stabilization ; Dated sensor ; No headphone port

Sony a6400 review

Sony's a6400 is a near-universally capable camera, with a market-leading autofocus implementation at a surprisingly modest price. Find out all the details on how the a6400 performs in our full review.

It's hard to overstate just how good the autofocus system is on the Sony a6400. It's got one of the best implementations out there: not just in its price range, but on the market, period. Once you set the system up, you can pretty much leave it alone...

Sony a6400

The Sony a6400 is a camera that straddles the line between consumer and enthusiast, delivering automatic operation for family snapshots with the image quality and speed aficionados love.

Compact build. 24MP APS-C image sensor. Quick, accurate autofocus. 11fps continuous drive. Large, sharp EVF. Selfie LCD. Built-in flash and hot shoe. 4K video without recording limit.

Omits in-body image stabilization. Flip-up screen not ideal for vloggers. Some operational frustrations. External charger not included. Only full-frame lenses are weather sealed. UHS-I card slot.

Bottom Line: The Sony a6400 is a camera that straddles the line between consumer and enthusiast, delivering automatic operation for family snapshots with the image quality and speed aficionados love.

Sony a6400

What We Love. The Sony a6400 performed so much better than we had expected, making shooting with it a pretty cool experience. Externally, it looks more like an entry-level model crafted for inexperienced shooters and fledgling vloggers. Internally,...

Sony A6400 Review

The new Sony Alpha A6400 is a camera with something of a split personality. On one hand it has the best AF system that Sony offers on any of their cameras, including the much more expensive full-frame models, but on the other it inherits the now dated...

Sony A6400 Review

Even though it introduced Sony's most impressive autofocus technology in some time, the Sony A6400 is not an exciting camera. There is not much on the specifications sheet that makes you say "wow," and it could even be argued it wasn't what fans were...

Sony a6400 Review: An Excellent Performer With A Few Trade-offs

Despite some of its shortcomings, such as lack of in-body image stabilization and limited touch-screen capabilities, the Sony a6400 is a solid camera within the increasingly crowded mirrorless market. And it's good to know that Sony hasn't abandoned...

Good image quality ; Full array of features ; 4K video ; Touch focus ; Excellent performance ; USB charging

Limited touch-screen capabilities ; LCD not fully articulated ; No in-body stabilization ; Dense menu system ; No external charger included

Get the Sony A6400 mirrorless camera if you want speedy performance and good image quality in a relatively small package but don't mind a few shortcomings like limited touch-screen capabilities.

Sony A6400 Review | Trusted Reviews

The middle child in Sony's mirrorless camera line-up offer fantastic specs and features for the price.

Fantastic AF tracking ; Small size is great for travelling ; Good range of accessories and lenses

Fiddly operation ; Limited battery life ; Viewfinder and screen using old technology

The Sony A6400 offers fantastic specifications for the price and features. Highlights include excellent auto-focus tracking, a compact travel design and a diverse set of compatible accessories and lenses. Were it not for minor issues with its handling...

Sony A6400 review

Sony's mid-range mirrorless stops just short of greatness

Lightning fast, super accurate autofocus ; Small, lightweight body ; Generally strong all-round image quality

Some awkward ergonomic choices ; No in-body stabilisation ; Very visible rolling shutter effect

A handful of key issues prevent Sony’s small, fast shooter from being a resounding triumph
