Sony Alpha SLT-A77 review

The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 has been a long time coming — the company's latest DSLR was announced in August, but production delays have kept it from being widely available even now. Many people have...

Excellent image and video quality ; Ridiculously fast ; Fantastic kit lens ; Built-in GPS ; Superior Live View and autofocus performance

Inferior low-light performance ; Lens ecosystem lags Canon and Nikon ; EVF isn't as good as an OVF ; Mediocre battery life

The A77 is good, but for $2,000 you can do better

Sony Alpha 77 (SLT-A77VQ)

The Sony Alpha 77 pumps out 24-megapixel stills at 10.3 frames per second and records 1080p60 video with continuous autofocus. Solid low-light performance, a sharp f/2.8 kit lens, a high-quality OLED EVF, and GPS capability round out the package.

Excellent kit lens. High-resolution sensor. Fast burst shooting. Good high ISO performance. 1080p60 video with autofocus. Crisp OLED EVF. GPS.

Recovery time needed after burst shooting. No optical viewfinder. Proprietary hot shoe.

If you're the type of shooter who wants to get out and take photos in inclement weather, note that the Alpha 77 does have some weather sealing—but it's not a fully weatherproof camera like the Pentax K-5 or Olympus E-5 ($1,699.99 body only, 3 stars)....

Sony Alpha SLT-A77V review

I'll lead off by saying that I enjoyed shooting with the Sony Alpha SLT-A77V more than any camera since the Nikon D7000 . It's heavy, especially with the 16-50mm kit lens (which, by the way, has become my favorite Sony lens), but the grip is comfy, it...

A well-designed camera that's enjoyable to shoot, partly thanks to a great viewfinder, the fixed-mirror Sony Alpha SLT-A77V bests the competition with features like a cleverly articulated display, built-in GPS for geotagging, and very good 1080/60p video.

There are some annoying omissions in the A77V's feature set, including odd limitations for raw and video shooting, plus battery life is subpar.

The Sony Alpha SLT-A77V is an excellent, well-designed camera for deep-pocketed amateurs; it nevertheless has a few limitations that may make it impractical for professionals.

Sony SLT-A77

After a four-year wait, Sony has returned to the enthusiast/semi-pro end of the DSLR market. Having made little impact in that market with the A700 that very closely resembled the conventional DSLRs made by Canon and Nikon, Sony has spent the...

Excellent 2.4 million-dot OLED EVF ; Versatile full-time live view system ; Very high-resolution 24MP CMOS sensor (but see caveats in 'cons', below) ; Exceptionally 'deep' feature set including Auto HDR and Sweep Panorama ; Class-leading video...

In-camera JPEGs don't show off the 24MP sensor to its best extent ; Comparatively strong noise reduction at medium and high ISO settings ; Very noisy raw files at high ISO settings ; Little control over high ISO noise reduction in JPEG mode ('auto' or...

The A77 is a well-designed camera which spans the mid-range and semi-professional categories. Its headline features - high pixel count and blazingly fast continuous shooting - will attract a lot of interest, but of greater utility in day to day use are...

Review: Sony Alpha SLT-A77

The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 differs from conventional DSLRs, and is more useful and fun to shoot with.

High-res OLED EVF provides ultrasharp view with WYSIWYG exposure feedback ; Superfast 12-fps shooting; excellent range of options for video capture ; Focus magnification and/or focus peaking for manual focus

EVF struggles a bit in very high-contrast scenes ; Noisier images than some competing cameras when shooting in low light at higher ISOs ; Default magnification for instant review not user-configurable

I use manual focus a lot, and the A77 provides a couple of terrific aids: focus magnification and focus peaking. Focus magnification blows up an area of the scene, such as the subject’s eyes; I fine-tune the focus, and then take the picture. But I’m...

Sony A77 Review

Making a major leap in the camera market, the Sony A77 reaches into pro territory, able to capture 12 frames per second with a 24.3-megapixel camera that feels great and handles like your typical enthusiast digital SLR. Its optional 16-50mm kit lens...

Very fast top frame rate; full-time phase-detect autofocus; Full 60p HD video; Excellent kit lens; Very good high-resolution sensor

Heavy; EVF appears dim when used in bright light; AF tracking in Movie mode was unreliable in our testing

The Sony Alpha A77 is a major leap forward for the company in DSLR design, features and image capabilities, finally putting Sony into the competitive mix with Canon and Nikon in the prosumer DSLR marketplace. The A77's 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor,...

Sony A77 M2 DSLR Review: Fast Shooter Great for Low Light

All in all, Sony's Alpha 77 M2 is a great camera that performs well in everyday situations. A large ISO range also makes it ideal for extreme low-light photography, while the translucent mirror system enables decent autofocus while you're shooting...

Tilt-and-swivel LCD ; Evenly exposed pictures with accurate color and sharp detail ; Wide ISO range for low-light photography ; Continuous shooting of 12 fps for up to 25 photos

Eye sensor too sensitive ; Overly aggressive noise reduction at high ISOs ; Poor smartphone Wi-Fi connectivity

Sony's Alpha 77 Mark 2 DSLR is a solid, fast-shooting camera that can do it all, but it especially shines in low-light settings.
