Slow Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 struggles to make a good impression

Beyond its small body and nice 10x zoom lens, this is a pretty average point-and-shoot.

The ; has a very good ultrawide-angle lens with a 10x zoom in a small slim body. It's also relatively easy to use.

The W690's shooting performance is slow and photos get noticeably noisier and softer at ISO 400, so you'll need a lot of light to get good results.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is a decent little 10x zoom camera, but similar models from Nikon, Panasonic, and even Sony itself offer more for your money.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is the slower, less talented sibling of the Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 . It has the same lens, ultracompact body, and a 3-inch LCD (though half the resolution), but after that, things go downhill for this little point-and-shoot.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690

A cheaper alternative to the impressive WX150, the W690 has the same 10x optical zoom in a very sleek package. This is, however, the main selling point of the camera. With its 16 megapixel CCD, the camera is limited to 720p video, loses the stereo...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 review

Where compact pocket cameras like this are concerned, the objects most often used to describe their size are decks of cards or cigarette packets. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is smaller still.

A truly compact camera; decent macro performance; good video output; Very simple controls; Sharp lens.

Shallow viewing angle on LCD; Some colour fringing.

Sony's done a great job of stripping out all of the complexities of photography in the Cyber-shot DSC-W690. It's got a good, sharp lens, and I liked its video performance, but some uneven illumination in my stills results and the shallow viewing angle...

Not What I was Expecting

I replaced a Sony dsc-H55 that they no longer make because it went bad in 2 years, with this w-690. I take pictures of homes and E-mail them. I use VGA in order to keep E-mail size small. The VGA pictures on this camera were very poor compared to the...
