Performance

Panasonic DMR-EH50

Outstanding recording quality, especially in LP mode; 100GB hard drive; chasing playback; high-speed HDD-to-DVD dubbing; free ; electronic programming guide; slot for Secure Digital media cards; flexible custom recording speed.

TV Guide EPG is still somewhat glitchy and not compatible with satellite TV; remote scrollwheel is more hindrance than help; no FireWire input.

Panasonic's top-of-the-line recorder boasts eye-popping recording quality, but its programming guide may pose a setup challenge with some cable systems.

Panasonic DMR-EH50S

A svelte DVD recorder with a 100GB hard drive, Panasonic's DMR-EH50S impresses on many levels. In our tests, it produced excellent videos recordings w...

Excellent images, no compression artefacts, easy to use TV guide

No firewire, scheduling restrictions

The DMR-EH50S makes high-quality recordings and is easy to use, but some users may not like the TV Guide On Screen program guide.

Panasonic DMR-EH50

The DMR-EH50 offers exceptional playback and recording options, although some small quirks do detract from the overall package.

Records to multiple DVD formats ; Good recording quality ; Multiple inputs

Can't downsample HDD recording quality ; Scrollwheel annoying ; Complex menus

The scroll wheel on the remote is a cute idea, but in actual use we found it a bit clunky and slow to respond. We also hit a problem in some menu functions with it, as there's a natural inclination to hit the enter key to stop track seeking, where in...

Panasonic does it right again

So I've had this recorder for over a year and a half. I use it every day to record for later viewing and archiving when I want to keep it. It records to hard drive flawlessly and archives to DVD +/- R, 99% of the time. Sometimes if the video has been...

Good menu navigation, 99% dependable dubbing, 100% hard drive recording and scheduling

The newer models have firewire input

Hearty machine

I'm on my second DMR-E50. The first one finally died after a year's hard labor (daily, nonstop use). I bought my second one shortly thereafter, and it's going strong. Excellent machine if you don't need a hard drive for editing.

Produces discs that work in all machines; produces an excellent produce; hearty

Doesn't produce an excellent product beyond the 3 hour mode

Good bye to the VCR

I was getting tired of juggling tapes around... putting them in to see what was recorded on them to make sure I didn't tape over anything I hadn't seen yet, etc. Then having a bad recording because the tape I used several times was worn out. Plus I...

Ease of use, functionality, versatility

None really

Good VCR Replacement

My good old VCR was dieing a slow death. You can't fine a good VCR for sale anymore, you have to go with a DVD recorder. There are many out on the market and their prices are going down fast, but if you spend a little more You can get a great machine.

100 mg harddrive, quite small easy set up

24 hour setup for TV guide, Manual

Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD Recorder / Player : The best DVD player I have ever owned

The Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD Recorder / Player is a very advanced piece of technology. Its shows just how far that we have come from VCR's. DVD players are now not just the thing of the future, but are quickly becoming a must-have if you are a movie...

Great Quality, records very well, Nice Playback Mode

A tad Expensive for a DVD player

Excellent low-mid price range DVD burner, with one weakness.

With set-top DVD burners becoming affordable, we decided to take the plunge. We already have a DVD+R burner on our computer (more on this later), but we wanted an easier way to convert our old VHS camcorder tapes to DVD. After doing quite a bit of...

Great progressive scan component video quality, recording is easy and generally good

Does not play DVD+R media, remote has annoying door covering some frequently-used buttons

It's ok, but I returned it.

I thought I'd get something to replace my old s-vhs machine, so I could enjoy the same or better picture quality, plus more flexible editing. I paid $800 Canadian, which is about $575 US.

Easier to find certain scenes, compared to using video tape

Picture quality and editing features not up to expectations
