Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD recorder

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD recorder has a reasonable price, but the lack of a high-definition digital TV tuner lets it down.

Good DVD upscaling, 250GB hard drive, stylish design

No built-in HD tuner, remote control could be better

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 DVD recorder looks good and has an excellent DVD upscaler, but its remote control is not suited to watching DVDs and the lack of a high-definition tuner means it can't display or record HD content.

Panasonic DMR-EX79 review

There's much to like in the feature-laden menus of Panasonic's latest HDD/DVD recorder

Great AV performance ; Well-featured overall

No STB control ; Can't copy DivX/JPEG to HDD

This is one of the best DVD recorders money can buy but a few minor flaws let down the overall score

Panasonic DMR-EX79 review

Despite its inability to decode high-definition signals, the Panasonic DMR-EX79 offers a reasonable feature set given its £317 price.

While the Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a capable DVD recorder with a decent-sized hard drive and excellent DVD upscaling, it is let down by the lack of an HD tuner. Even so, it's worth considering because of its price.

Panasonic DMR-EX79 review

The Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a DVD recorder with a 250GB hard drive and an HDMI 1.3 port for upscaling DVDs to 1080p but lacks a HD tuner.

Capable DVD recorder, good sized 250GB hard drive, good DVD upscaler, Gracenote CD database support

No HD tuner, can't decode high-definition signals, poor remote control, unable to transfer data to USB drives

While the Panasonic DMR-EX79 is a capable DVD recorder with a decent-sized hard drive and excellent DVD upscaling, it is let down by the lack of an HD tuner. Even so, it's worth considering because of its price.

Panasonic DMR-EX79

Excellent image quality. Versatility: record programmes easily and later offload them to DVD if necessary. Basic features are easy to use. There are controls for TV on the remote as well. Good looks.

There is no indication of how much of the recorded program is left to watch and no bookmarking for recordings. So if you have to interrupt watching your recording and want to resume from the same place where you left off, there is no easy way of doing...

A pleasurable experience

I had never owned a hard drive recorder before and thought I would have problems but I was amazed to find how easy it was to use. The quality is fantastic and I am enjoying using it very much.

Panasonic DMR-EX79

Most functions easy to use.

Can't easily do instant recording. Like when phone rings during a live programme. Don't like having adds on the programme guide, would rather the whole screen was used for programme information.
