Philips DVP642

Dutch manufacturer Philips has used an operating system from somewhere in the Far East to produce a DivX-friendly DVD player designed to satisfy downloaded-movie fans the world over. Is it happy time in file-sharing land or globalization run amok?

Inexpensive; excellent overall file compatibility; slim and stylish; plays home-brewed MP3 DVDs; upgradable firmware.

Rudimentary controls; subpar progressive-scan processing; occasional audio dropout; still incompatible with some DivX files; can't play DTS soundtracks.

The Philips DVP642 is good choice for DivX aficionados, but everyday DVD watchers can do better for the price.

Philips DVP 642 DVD/DivX Player

With the introduction of the DivX codec, movie buffs found a cheap an easy solution to back up their movie collections. The problem with Divx movies was if you wanted to play your Divx movies on your TV you had to go through tedious connections from...

Some Xvid don't work, Incompatible with GMC and QP

All in all this is one cool little player that can pretty much play anything you can throw at it. Not to mention it's incredibly affordable. This is truly a Divx fan's dream machine

Had this since it came out.

Almost great

Worth the money if you have a large divx-xvid collection as I do. I would however investigate other more recent players that might help with this audio problem.

I bought it for divx playback and it pretty much does as promised. I have minimal problems with media incompatibility. although I understand it does not handle dvd rw

The only problem have had is that on some divx playback when you ff or fr the audio comes out of sync. There is no way to get it back in except to start the movie over. Playing the divx from the beginning without ff or fr is no problem. This only...

Decent but lacking

I purchase two of these purely to watch videos encoded with Xvid. The player serves its purpose just fine for me; however

Videos over a certain bitrate apparently need to buffer on my player. My second player has gone awry in less than a month with frequent restarts...very annoying

Awesome Player

I like turtles.

Plays everything perfectly - including dual layer discs. Well worth $50

The only goofy thing is that the power LED is on bright red when the unit is off. When the player is turned on, the LED turns off. Not a problem, just annoyingly mystifying
